Dr. Wellman currently serves as the memory care director and music therapist at Lumina Las Vegas, a role she has held since 2023. In this capacity, she is dedicated to ensuring her staff are fully trained to effectively support individuals with memory loss. She also conducts Alzheimer's disease and dementia care seminars, providing eight hours of comprehensive training. Her efforts extend beyond professional education to include helping families understand their loved ones' conditions better and advocating for a more dementia-friendly community.
Before joining Lumina Las Vegas, Dr. Wellman has been an independent distributor for Young Living Essential Oils since 2009, a testament to her belief in holistic health approaches. From 2017 to 2023, she was a music therapist at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, where she co-developed and trademarked the Rhythmic Reminiscence program, an innovative initiative that received great acclaim for its effectiveness in various settings. Additionally, she shared her expertise as an adjunct professor at Ivy Tech Community College from 2009 until 2023 and served as a music therapist at Valley Hospital Medical Center between 2015 and 2018.
Dr. Wellman's career also includes positions as a music therapist and developmental specialist at B. Well Therapy and Wellness from 2015 to 2016, an instructor at the University of Phoenix from 2012 until 2015 and the owner of Wellman Therapy Services Inc. between 2005 and 2015. Her dedication to her field is further evidenced by her contributions as a music therapy blogger for the Early Childhood Music & Movement Association from 2012 to 2015 and as an adjunct faculty member at IUPUI in 2014.
Dr. Wellman's professional success is deeply rooted in her academic foundation, which began with a Bachelor of Arts in music history and theory, oboe performance from Hiram College in 1993. She subsequently earned a Master of Music in music therapy from Ohio University in 1997, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in educational psychology specializing in lifespan development from Capella University in 2007. Her commitment to continuous learning is underscored by numerous certifications, including being a Certified Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Care Trainer and a neurologic music therapy fellow. She is also an active member of several industry-related organizations such as the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners and the American Music Therapy Association, highlighting her expertise in a wide range of therapeutic areas, including geropsychiatry, oncology and early intervention, among others.
Outside her career, Dr. Wellman is committed to civic engagement through volunteering for the Parkinson's Foundation Moving Day, HDSA's Team Hope Walk, Dementia Friendly Southern Nevada/Clark County and contributing to research through an NIH grant with the Benjamin Rose Institute. Her creative output includes authoring "Truthful Tips for Dementia Caregivers," "Truthful Behavior Tips for Dementia Caregivers" alongside contributing chapters to textbooks.
Looking forward, Dr. Wellman aims to expand her impact through training more individuals beyond her staff and enhancing community awareness about dementia care. Currently working on her book focused on transitioning to memory care, she continues to strive toward making meaningful contributions both within her field and in the broader community.
