Arthur F. Gelb, MD, Celebrated for Excellence in the Field of Pulmonology

As an expert in early pathophysiologic detection of asthma and COPD/emphysema, Dr. Gelb has made valuable contributions to the ongoing scholarly conversation in the field.

    LAKEWOOD, CA, July 15, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Arthur F. Gelb, MD, is a distinguished biographee of Marquis Who's Who. He was recently spotlighted in New York City's Times Square on a 22-story screen that is passed by an estimated 1.5 million people daily. Dr. Gelb is a pulmonologist and a clinical professor of medicine with the Arthur F. Gelb Medical Corporation. Since 1974, he has also accumulated critical experience in a concurrent role as a clinical professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Gelb has also served patients as a pulmonologist at Lakewood Regional Medical Center since 1974, where he thrived for one term as presiding chair of the Department of Medicine and Pulmonary Diseases.

Following an abiding passion for the sciences and for helping others, Dr. Gelb achieved outstanding academic success. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Vanderbilt University and then pursued an MD at St. Louis University School of Medicine. Subsequently, Dr. Gelb was named an intern and chief resident of pulmonary diseases at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital Center. Additionally, Dr. Gelb was recognized with an NIH-supported fellowship at the Cardiovascular Research Institute of the University of California, San Francisco; he also holds pulmonary disease and internal medicine certifications from the American Board of Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Diseases.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Dr. Gelb achieved the rank of major and served as a pulmonologist alongside Majors Bruce Pastor, Jack Kleid and Ralph Epstein as well as Colonel Keith Kellogg Hunt Jr. at Madigan Army General Hospital from 1971 to 1973. He has also shared his broad knowledge and passion for health care at the rank of visiting professor at prestigious institutions across the globe, including in Ireland, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, Japan, Israel, Austria, Belgium, Brazil and Turkey. Dr. Gelb also enjoyed the exciting opportunity to study in Paris with Arlette Colchen, MD, and has worked with the premier thoracic surgeon Robert J. McKenna, MD.

As an expert in early pathophysiologic detection of asthma and COPD/emphysema, Dr. Gelb has made valuable contributions to the ongoing scholarly conversation in the field. He served on the editorial board of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology from 2016 to 2021 and as a reviewer for respected trade publications such as Annals of Internal Medicine, Pediatric Pulmonology, the Journal of Applied Physiology and the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Gelb has also authored or co-authored over 100 publications on the subject of pulmonary diseases.

An affiliate of numerous associations, Dr. Gelb maintains a wide network. He holds sustained membership in the California Medical Association, the Los Angeles County Medical Association, the American College of Chest Physicians and the European Respiratory Society, which named him a USA delegate from 2012 to 2015.

Dr. Gelb is honored to have earned numerous accolades throughout his career. He was recognized as a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Physicians. Additionally, the American Thoracic Society included him among their 2018 compilation of top 180 scientists, and he was named an honorary fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology in 2019. Dr. Gelb was also humbled to have been a listee in the Marquis Who's Who in America in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Dr. Gelb attributes his success to hard work and honors countless mentors for their positive and productive influence on his life and work. Nathan Horowitz, MD, his uncle, was a family physician whose dedication to patients left a deep impression on Dr. Gelb. He also cites the mentorship of professors Harold Lyons, MD, Warren Gold, MD, and Jay Nadel, MD, as well as the contributions of Michelle Bolling, RN, and Alfred Yamamoto, MD, the chief of pathology at Lakewood Regional Medical Center. Additionally, Dr. Gelb remains grateful to former pulmonary associates Gail Levee, MD, Alan Szeftel, MD, Joseph Kuei, MD, and Jonathan Markowitz, MD, as well as to the capable pulmonary/intensivist associates and medical staff.
