As an artist, Mr. Matsumoto's highly acclaimed work has been on display in one-person, two-person, and group exhibitions for more than 45 years at various locations, including the RISD Museum of Art.
WAKEFIELD, RI, July 16, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Darrell Matsumoto has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Matsumoto has significantly contributed to art and design, particularly in photography and media arts. Since 2014, he has taught as an associate professor of photography at Anna Maria College in Paxton, Massachusetts. Additionally, since 2016, Mr. Matsumoto has been the art and design department director and the gallery director on campus.
Under Mr. Matsumoto's leadership, the department has seen substantial growth, including introducing a master's degree program designed to meet the evolving needs of students. This innovative program launched its initial cohort last year and is set to expand further next year. Mr. Matsumoto's dedication to education and his students is evident in his efforts to develop the master's program in integrated media arts over the past decade.
Mr. Matsumoto's career in academia began over 25 years ago. Before his tenure at Anna Maria College, he served as an adjunct professor of art at the Community College of Rhode Island from 2014 to 2015. He was also a professor of photography at the New Hampshire Institute of Art from 2012 to 2013. Earlier, Mr. Matsumoto found success and expertise as an associate professor of photography and media arts and the department chair at Chester College of New England between 2002 and 2012. He also worked as a part-time faculty in photography at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1998 to 2002, as a photographer, gallery assistant, and adjunct faculty at Roger Williams University between 1992 and 2002, and as an assistant professor of art at Hamilton College from 1987 to 1991.
As an artist, Mr. Matsumoto's highly acclaimed work has been on display in one-person, two-person, and group exhibitions for more than 45 years at various locations, including the RISD Museum of Art, the William Benton Museum of Art, the Franklin Furnace Archive at MoMA, the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Contemporary Museum in Honolulu. He has also hosted many gallery panel discussions and spoken at professional conferences nationwide.
In preparation for his career, Mr. Matsumoto received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in fine art and design from the University of Hawaii, Manoa, in 1980 and a Master of Fine Arts in photography from Rhode Island School of Design in 1982.
In addition to his academic roles, Mr. Matsumoto is actively involved in various industry- and civic-related organizations such as the Society for Photographic Education. He also supports local art fairs and galleries and the Nature Conservancy, is involved with Hera Gallery, and serves as a board member for Sculpture Space and the Cordell Center for the Arts. Moreover, Mr. Matsumoto has authored/co-authored over 20 scholarly articles as an expert in his field.
Throughout his career, Mr. Matsumoto has received numerous national and regional awards for his contributions to photography, including the En Foco New Works Photography Award. He also received a Diverse Forms Artist Project Grant and a Light Work Photographers Grant.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Matsumoto remains dedicated to mentoring graduate students and aims to transfer the department's legacy to his junior colleagues. As he approaches retirement within the next few years, he also plans to dedicate more time to his studio work.
