Across more than 40 years, Ms. Ong has carved out a distinguished place for herself in the field of biochemistry/molecular biology, currently serving as a full time laboratory manager for the Gene Expression Laboratory (Evans) at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies. As a laboratory manager, Ms. Ong is responsible for managing personnel, general maintenance of the lab, the lab's budget, approving purchase orders, ensuring safety across all departments, and allocating grant funding properly. Her most notable achievement is working directly with the lab's director, Dr. Ronald Evans, who she considers a great source of inspiration.
She first joined The Salk Institute in 1978. During the first 26 years, Ms. Ong served a dual role as lab manager and researcher. She managed 48 people at its peak and multimillion dollar budgets. As a researcher, she gained a reputation of having a strong work ethic, high standard of work, dedication, commitment, and proficiency. She worked nights and weekends due to competitiveness of research projects. She co-authored 23 scientific research papers that have received more than 20,000 citations demonstrating the value of her work. Ms. Ong's accomplishments have been further recognized through a number of accolades. She was the recipient of The Outstanding Jubilarian Biochemist award (2017) and was named one of 150 luminaries in honor of the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Pharmacy's 150th anniversary (2021). She has been given her 45th year service award in 2024 at the Salk Institute.
Prior to immigrating to the United States from the Philippines, Ms. Ong contributed as a faculty member in the chemistry and chemical engineering departments of Feati University and Mapúa Institute of Technology. Her early career experiences include working as a quality control inspector at Winthrop-Stearns and as a trainee at the Republic of the Philippines Department of Science and Technology's Food and Nutrition Research Institute.
Ms. Ong set herself up for success with a solid academic foundation. She received a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from the University of Santo Tomas, followed by earning a master's degree in chemistry education from Ateneo de Manila University in 1978.
Beyond her professional life, Ms. Ong demonstrates her values through civic service. She has offered her services as an extraordinary minister for the Catholic Church and previously served as the treasurer of the Diocesan Commission for Filipino Catholics. In addition, Ms. Ong has regularly volunteered at fundraising events for various causes, recognizing the power of giving back to the movements and ideals she believes in.
Outside of her career, Ms. Ong spends her time exercising, praying, and participating in church activities that embrace her faith. She is a devoted wife, mother to three children, and grandmother to seven grandchildren. Ms. Ong's passion for biochemistry/molecular biology has left a lasting impact on the field, and she aims to continue contributing in whatever ways possible for the foreseeable future.
