After graduating from the High School of Music and Art, Mr. Koesten, at the suggestion of a pharmacist next door to his mother's beauty parlor, applied to and was accepted by the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy. Upon earning his Bachelor of Pharmacy degree in 1968, he joined Misericordia Hospital as a pharmacist. He subsequently earned a Master of Science in Pharmacy Administration from Long Island University's Arnold and Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy. After leaving hospital pharmacy, Mr. Koesten worked for chain pharmacies including Whelan Drug and Rite Aid. At Rite Aid Mr. Koesten held various positions including Pharmacy Manager, Director of Professional Placement, and Pharmacy Division Manager. Mr. Koesten was also employed by Eckerd Drug. After retiring from Eckerd Drug in 2001, Mr. Koesten was hired by PetMed Express (1-800-Petmeds) as Director of Pharmacy Services. In furtherance of his education, Mr. Koesten earned a Certificate in Veterinary Pharmacy from the University of Florida.
Upon retiring (again) from PetMed Express in 2012, he established his own consulting company, Vet Pharm Consulting, Inc. where he serves as President. Through Vet Pharm Consulting Mr. Koesten offers veterinary pharmacy education and training programs for pharmacists and pharmacy staff, as well as other services to the pharmacy industry.
Mr. Koesten is an Eagle Scout with Bronze Palm, and Brotherhood, Order of the Arrow. He is also honored to be commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel. Mr. Koesten remains active in the pharmacy community, having membership in The Palm Beach Pharmacy Association, The Florida Pharmacy Association and the American Pharmacists Association. Mr. Koesten is also a member of the American Society for Pharmacy Law and the American College of Veterinary Pharmacists. Mr. Koesten is licensed in Florida as a pharmacist and is also licensed as a consultant pharmacist. Mr. Koesten is also licensed as a pharmacist in 19 other States.
While his career has been filled with highlights, he takes the most pride in his accomplishments with PetMed Express, joining the company during a challenging period for the company. Looking ahead, Mr. Koesten intends to experience his consulting practice's continued growth and success.
