Col. Wheeler, a retired United States U.S. Army Green Beret colonel, proudly served his country for more than 25 years, 18 of those dedicated to the Special Operations community. His roles included managing director of the 5th Special Forces Group from 2010 to 2012 and chief of operations program manager at the United States Special Operations Command from 2014 to 2016. Notably, in 2014, while serving as a special operations adviser for Europe, he provided a pivotal white paper on U.S. policy toward the Middle East that was presented to the National Security Council, President Barack Obama, and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel. In 2019, Col. Wheeler was named chief of staff of the United States Army Special Operations' Force Modernization Center. Prior to that role, he served as chief operating officer for executive leadership for the 1st Special Warfare Training Group.
For his dedication to the nation's armed forces, Col. Wheeler received three Bronze Star Medals, among other military honors. As an accomplished speaker and author, he has delivered keynote addresses at prestigious events such as the US Special Operations Command/US Air Force Warfighter Talks and has published insightful articles in The Small Wars Journal.
Transitioning to civilian life, Col. Wheeler founded InnoStrat LLC in 2020, where he served as president until 2022. Concurrently, he joined Northwestern Mutual as a financial advisor and wealth strategist in 2020. In 2023, Col. Wheeler founded Halcyon Wealth Strategies, a Northwestern Mutual–affiliated wealth management company where he serves as a wealth management advisor. He has been instrumental in guiding clients through complex financial landscapes for the past four years. Col. Wheeler holds a Master of Science in defense analysis with a focus on irregular warfare from the Naval Postgraduate School and a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice and law enforcement administration from Northern Arizona University.
In 2019, Col. Wheeler was nominated to an elite position on the National Board of Examiners for the Malcom Baldrige Performance Excellence Program. He is a certified financial planner as well as a certified project director from the Institute of Project Management, and an examiner for the Baldrige National Quality Award. He also holds various securities licenses from FINRA and insurance licenses from the North Carolina Department of Insurance.
Col. Wheeler's contributions extend beyond his professional endeavors. He has been an assistant scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America and is actively involved with Veteran's Bridge Home, the Charlotte Economics Club, and the World Affairs Council of Charlotte.
Outside his professional life, Col. Wheeler is a devoted father to two children. Over the coming years, he envisions growing Halcyon Wealth Strategies into a robust practice with a six-person team while mentoring junior associates to ensure generational continuity in wealth management services.
