Before teaching at the college level, Dr. Cato spent over 15 years as a substitute teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District. Beyond teaching, he was an artist with the Long Beach Opera in 2011, where he showcased his exceptional vocal talents.
One of Dr. Cato's most remarkable accomplishments came through his singing career. While living in New York, he was invited to audition for the show "Riverdance." In 1998, due to work permit issues in London, Dr. Cato left the show but later received a scholarship to pursue a doctorate at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). During his doctoral studies, he was called back to perform in Ireland before touring in France and the U.K.
Aside from teaching, Dr. Cato continues to perform, having recently finished the performance of Turandot the Opera with the Los Angeles Opera. Dr. Cato attributes his success to his dedication and hard work, as well as the encouragement and guidance of his teachers. His commitment to his craft and students has made him respected in classical music and vocal performance. Looking forward to future opportunities, Dr. Cato is considering expanding his teaching and performance activities by starting an opera company. He believes understanding how the voice works allows one to recognize when a student's voice is or is not working well and how to correct it.
