His previous roles include President of Medical Staff and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at West Suburban Medical Center from 2019 and 2014, respectively. Dr. Tiesenga has been a practicing surgeon at Suburban Surgery Center since 1999 and continues to serve as a medical doctor at Tiesenga Surgical Associates S.C. in Elmwood Park, Illinois.
Dr. Tiesenga's professional journey began with his role as a research assistant in the department of surgery at the University of Illinois. His expertise in general and bariatric surgery has earned him significant recognition, including being the first in Illinois to receive the General Surgery Robotic Epicenter Designation in 2014. His contributions to the field are further highlighted by his training of over 250 surgeons in robotic surgery and authoring more than 200 articles in surgical journals.
In addition to his clinical roles, Dr. Tiesenga is an active member of several industry-related organizations. He has served as president of District 5 for the Chicago Medical Society since 2012 and has been a board member and past president of the Illinois Association of Bariatric Surgeons Inc. since 2010. His memberships also include the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons, the Illinois State Medical Society, the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and he is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Tiesenga's academic background laid a strong foundation for his successful career. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and chemistry from Calvin University, which he obtained in 1984. After earning his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1991, he completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Illinois–Metropolitan Group Hospitals in 1996. He attributes his success to his unwavering dedication and hard work.
Among his numerous accolades, Dr. Tiesenga was honored with the Ken Douglas Award from West Suburban Medical Center in 2010 for his substantial impact on the hospital's medical system.
