Eventually retiring as a Captain in 2023 after 25 years of uniformed service. Her career in this sector also allowed Ms. Sherwood to serve on various Indian reservations, including Hopi, Pawnee, Pawhuska, Colorado River, Chemehuevi, Hualapai, Havasupai, and Moapa, demonstrating exceptional leadership and technical skills, and contributing to the improvement of laboratory services and patient care.
Although she earned numerous Army, PHS, and Indian Health Service awards over her 25 years of service, her highest awards, and the ones she is most proud of, are her Meritorious Service Medal from the US Army and her Director's Award from the Indian Health Service Director.
Ms. Sherwood's educational achievements have been crucial to her professional success. She received a Bachelor of Science in clinical laboratory science from Northwestern State University of Louisiana in 1993 after completing an internship in medical technology (clinical laboratory science) at the prestigious Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation Hospital in New Orleans and a Master of Science in quality assurance from California State University in 2005. Additionally, Ms. Sherwood holds credentials as a certified medical technologist through the American Society of Clinical Pathology and a certified clinical laboratory consultant through the American Medical Technology.
