In addition to his primary vocation, Mr. Deshpande continues to present and publish research, demonstrating his drive to share his knowledge and improve data science as a whole.
CAMBRIDGE, MA, July 24, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Yash Deshpande has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Deshpande has carved out a distinguished career in data science, with a specialization in machine learning and artificial intelligence. He currently serves as a senior scientist in machine learning for Merck & Co., having previously worked as a machine learning engineer at Prometheus Biosciences and Fresenius Medical Care North America. Mr. Deshpande is particularly proud of his time at Prometheus, now a wholly owned subsidiary of Merck & Co., during which he led a small team of machine learning engineers to develop a new AI-driven diagnostics discovery platform. His current role at Merck & Co. focuses broadly on two areas of research: using massive patient data sets provided by hospitals to build companion diagnostic algorithms, and identifying biological mechanisms of disease using AI with the help of multi-modal datasets. The algorithms developed by Mr. Deshpande and his team are used, among other things, to identify patients who are likely to respond to a drug treating a disease like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). They are also used to identify novel drug targets for rare and/or low-resource diseases.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Deshpande has established himself in the industry through experience developing data solutions for a range of problems such as sales incentive planning at Evanston-based pharmaceutical consulting firm ZS, workforce analytics at NYC-based start-up Revelio Labs, and consumption forecasting at media giant NBCUniversal, before choosing to focus on generating patient impact in healthcare using machine learning and AI.
Mr. Deshpande's performance in his field was born of his academic journey. He received a Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering from the University of Pune in 2016. Mr. Deshpande then earned a Master of Science in Data Science from New York University's Center for Data Science in 2020. He further established his authority in the field by conducting research on the use of multi-modal data for representation learning on knowledge graphs, work which was presented at the Workshop on Multimodal Representation Learning in 2021. His range of experience lays a foundation for his current work, where he hopes to continue using machine learning and AI to improve patient outcomes. He credits his success to curiosity, a willingness to venture outside his comfort zone and the support of friends and family.
In addition to his primary vocation, Mr. Deshpande continues to present and publish research, demonstrating his drive to share his knowledge and improve data science as a whole. He also contributes his time to community efforts outside of his career. Mr. Deshpande has volunteered in the past with Child Rights and You, a nonprofit that works to better the lives of children in India. He is a staunch supporter of housing reform in the US, and volunteers his time with A Better Cambridge, a pro-housing non-profit.
Outside of his professional life, Mr. Deshpande enjoys lifting weights, learning new languages, and practicing martial arts. In the future, he hopes to form his own team of machine learning experts to begin addressing the many complex issues surrounding the ethical use of data to improve patient outcomes in the rapidly expanding field of AI and machine learning. Mr. Deshpande aims to utilize his knowledge to deliver better healthcare to those afflicted with rare and ill-understood diseases, especially those in marginalized groups—an aspiration that represents his admirable ability to be at the forefront of technological innovation without losing sight of how those changes impact the world at large.
