Dr. Kliman built his reputation for his ability to work with traumatized children as the founder and director of preventive psychiatry service at Elmhurst Hospital Center (formerly Elmhurst General Hospital). His wide-ranging professional history includes roles as an assistant clinical professor at Mount Sinai Medical School's department of psychiatry and especially as the founder of the Center for Preventive Psychiatry, a nonprofit devoted to assisting traumatized or developmentally disordered young children. His career started in 1963 when he took on the position of principal investigator at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in a research project exploring how children react to the death of parents and how to support their mourning.
An equally impressive academic background provides the foundation for Dr. Kliman's success. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Cincinnati in 1949 and an MD from Harvard Medical School in 1953. Dr. Kliman completed residencies in psychiatry at the Montrose Veterans Administration Hospital, the Payne Whitney Clinic, and the Bronx Municipal Hospital and served as the chief of psychiatry at the U.S. Naval Hospital, achieving the rank of lieutenant commander. He has been certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and in child psychiatry and adult, child, and adolescent analysis by the American Psychoanalytic Association.
Dr. Kliman is a member of many important organizations relevant to his field. He is affiliated with the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis, the Southwest Psychoanalytic Society and the International Association for Neuropsychoanalysis, among others. Dr. Kliman has offered his insight to several committees for the American Psychoanalytic Association, including the Committee on Government Relations and Insurance, the Committee on Psychoanalysis and the Community, and the Committee on Social Issues. In addition to appearing as a guest on various news programs, such as "The Barbara Walters Show," he has given over 100 presentations, published dozens of papers, and authored eight books, including 2011's "Reflective Network Therapy in the Preschool Classroom."
To commemorate his accomplishments, Dr. Kliman has been presented with numerous accolades. He has been honored with the Janusz Korczak Award, the Dean Brockman Award, the American Psychoanalytic Association's Humanitarian Award, and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry's Rieger Award. Dr. Kliman is a two-time recipient of the Anna Freud Award from the American Psychoanalytic Association.
Outside of his career, Dr. Kliman is a devoted father to five children and enjoys swimming, piloting planes, oil painting, and riding tricycles. He credits his success in psychiatry to his journey of overcoming transgenerational trauma and health problems, as well as being instilled with leadership qualities from a young age. As a survivor of a genetic disorder, Dr. Kliman takes great pride in helping other people deal with severe stress and challenges.
