Margo L. Azzarelli has found success as a local historian

One of Ms. Azzarelli's most significant achievements has been obtaining a historical marker from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission on Lackawanna Avenue.

SCRANTON, PA, July 24, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Margo L. Azzarelli has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Ms. Azzarelli is a distinguished author, historian and playwright with a profound expertise in local history. She has dedicated her career to preserving and sharing the rich historical narratives of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and the surrounding region. Ms. Azzarelli's journey in historical research and writing began in 1998 when she embarked on a freelance writing career. Over the years, she has become a prominent figure in the field, contributing significantly to various publications and historical projects.

Having begun writing at the age of 12, Ms. Azzarelli's work was first published in various wrestling publications during the 1990s. She gradually shifted her focus from wrestling to historical writing after her husband discovered a trunk filled with artifacts dating back to 1838, much of which had belonged to a prominent family in the local area. This turn of events led her to explore the history of Scranton more deeply, with her favorite topic being the 1800 labor history of the region. Her first historical book was released in 2010 via Arcadia Publishing.

Since 2009, Ms. Azzarelli has been an author with Fonthill Media, Arcadia Publishing and The History Press. Her notable works include contributions to the Arcadia Images of America Series with titles such as "Taylor," "Green Ridge," "Old Forge and Moosic," "Lackawanna County Chronicles," "Scranton Through Time," and "Labor Unrest in Scranton," the latter of which was co-written with her daughter, Marnie. She was also co-writer for "Forest Hill Cemetery" and "Steamtown National Historic Site."

In addition to her work as an author, Ms. Azzarelli has been a local history columnist for the Lackawanna County Newspaper since 2011. She also served as a local history journalist for Examiner.com from 2011 to 2012.

Ms. Azzarelli's commitment to historical preservation extends beyond writing. From 2018 to 2022, she was an associate at Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where she continues to contribute to the site's mission of preserving railroad history.

One of Ms. Azzarelli's most significant achievements has been obtaining a historical marker from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission on Lackawanna Avenue. This marker commemorates the 1877 riot during the coal and labor strike, ensuring that this pivotal event remains part of the community's collective memory.

Ms. Azzarelli's dedication to her craft has earned her numerous accolades, including recognition as one of the Top 30 Over 50 by Happenings Magazine and receiving the Best of Local Author award from Electric City for four consecutive years. She has also been recognized in the Best Column Category by the Pennsylvania Women's Press Association.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Ms. Azzarelli is actively involved as a board member for the Actors Circle Theatre, contributing her expertise to the local arts community. On a personal level, she enjoys watching horror movies and spending time with her daughter. She is passionate about preserving Scranton's history and aims to incorporate it more into local schools' curricula. Additionally, she plans to create another Arcadia book focusing on Nay Aug Park and is considering a separate career as a horror novelist.
