Upon graduating from La Joya High School in 1965, Mr. Flores pursued a formal education, completing a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and Spanish at the University of Texas-Pan American in 1968. Subsequently, he began his career in education, serving as a mathematics teacher at Brownsville High School. Two years later, he was allowed to change his career path, doubling his salary as a U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspector. For over 30 years, he worked in Brownsville, Rio Grande City, Texas, and Norfolk, Virginia, in numerous roles, eventually becoming the port director. In this capacity, Mr. Flores enforced international laws, collected revenue, and prevented narcotics smuggling.
During his tenure with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Mr. Flores also served as the Chapter 160 union president of the National Treasury Employees Union. Similarly, he established himself as a prominent real estate broker and agency owner in his area, specializing in residential and commercial sales. In addition to his work, he contributed to his community as president of Sembradores Unidos Association and the Mr. Amigo Association, which provide scholarships to impoverished students. Now retired, Mr. Flores explores nature, collecting deer horns that he also decorates. Additionally, he is an avid reader and writer, having self-published an autobiography that he distributed to family and friends.
Given his outstanding achievements across industries, Mr. Flores has been honored many times, earning the OHTLI Award from the Mexican Consul for his dedication to providing professional opportunities for the next generation of Mexican professionals. Throughout his career, he has also been honored with the National Performance Review Board's Hammer Award by Vice President Al Gore for "doing more with less." While his career has been filled with highlights, Mr. Flores takes the most pride in being named Manager of the Year in the Southwest Region and managing approximately $350 billion in annual importations as the U.S. Customs port director in Norfolk, Virginia.
Though hard work and dedication have brought him far in his career, Mr. Flores credits his success to his hardworking parents, who encouraged him to pursue higher education. Looking toward the future, he intends to continue enjoying life, traveling, and writing.
