An only child raised by a widowed mother, Ms. Shields struggled with a fear of public speaking from a young age. While earning an undergraduate degree, she was encouraged to audition for a play at the University of Michigan. Supported by the theater department head, she discovered a hidden talent for public speaking and eventually pursued a Master of Science in speech and language pathology. Upon graduating from the University of Michigan, Ms. Shields expanded her professional knowledge by completing a certificate in clinical confidence through the American Speech-Language Hearing Association.

Additionally, she is the owner of Speaking With Authority, which aims to provide its clients with practical voice tips and techniques that improve how others communicate personally and professionally. Through Speaking With Authority, Ms. Shields offers several workshops and keynotes entitled "The Voice That Means Business," "Creating a Vocal Image that Improves Your Bottom Line," and "Confidence Can Be Coached!" Her Executive Speech/Voice Coaching success has been recognized nationally.
Alongside her educational and professional pursuits, Ms. Shields created a podcast called "Voice That Means Business" and authored the award-winning book, "The Voice That Means Business: How to Speak With Authority, Confidence, and Credibility Anytime... Anywhere." Similarly, she has been a national fitness presenter and master trainer. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Ms. Shields aligns herself with the National Speakers Association and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Her frequent radio and television appearances have helped countless listeners and viewers with fun, practical tips and techniques to find their "authentic" and credible voice.
In conjunction with her work, Ms. Shields contributes to her community through Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the American Cancer Society, and Millbrook United Methodist Church. While her career has been filled with highlights, she takes the most pride in positively impacting young women who struggle with confidence and projecting their voices. Though hard work and dedication have brought her far in her career, she credits her success to staying true to herself, remaining authentic, and her faith in God. Looking forward, Ms. Shields intends to continue funding the scholarship she established at Millbrook United Methodist Church.
