NEW YORK, NY, July 30, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Jeffrey Phlegar has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
After more than a decade of leadership as chairman and chief executive officer, Mr. Phlegar retired from MacKay Shields LLC in 2024. Having served in that role since 2011, he guided the firm to nearly tripling its assets and sustaining profitability during a challenging market and transformational industry environment. Mr. Phlegar oversaw almost 200 employees, focusing on business strategy, global growth, strategic client relationships, high-quality governance and new product development. He extended the reach of MacKay Shields, establishing a locally licensed entity in Europe and the United Kingdom and served as a senior member of the NYLIM (New York Life Investment Management) Management Committee.
Mr. Phlegar was invited and served as an advisor to the U.S. Department of Treasury through the Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee for seven years, offering observations and recommendations on the state of the economy, market structure, technical financing issues and management of the federal debt. In 2008, he was selected to bring the stewardship of his team at AllianceBernstein to assist the U.S. Treasury's Troubled Asset Relief Program in designing and implementing programs to stabilize financial systems during the Global Financial Crisis.
Before joining MacKay Shields, Mr. Phlegar was a member of the AllianceBernstein LP Executive Committee and oversaw the Fixed Income business unit as Chief Investment Officer of a global client portfolio totaling over $180-billion. His time with AllianceBernstein was marked by a variety of success stories, including the formation of the special situations business unit to explore new avenues of investment services and opportunistic investing. Mr. Phlegar began his career in financial services in the 1980s when as an account executive for Dreyfus Corporation, he learned basic interactions with clients and the day-to-day performance of mutual funds.
In addition to his extensive work at MacKay Shields and AllianceBernstein, Mr. Phlegar has provided his expert guidance in advisory roles for fund boards and asset management companies, including New York Life Investment Management International, Candriam, the Plainview Funds board of directors, and the Brewer Lane Ventures Fund I and II advisory committee. He maintains membership in the National Association of Corporate Directors, linking him to a network of resources shared by other executives.
Mr. Phlegar's career success has been bolstered by a solid academic foundation. He received a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance from Hofstra University in 1998, followed by earning a Master of Business Administration from Adelphi University in 1990. This education provided Mr. Phlegar with the knowledge of business essentials that would prove crucial for his work in asset management. He credits his success primarily to his skill at assembling strong teams, embracing change, and believing that his greatest achievements were due to working together with others rather than individual accomplishments. Today, Mr. Phlegar continues to provide his insights to the Hofstra University, Deans Advisory Board.
Beyond his professional life, Mr. Phlegar and his family formed the NEPM Foundation. He serves as the President of the foundation, in honor of his late wife. NEPM seeks to support research efforts to find a cure for life threatening forms of brain cancer as well as families affected by the disease.
While formally retired, Mr. Phlegar remains passionate about the asset/wealth management industry and intends to continue to make a positive impact on the future leaders who will drive the industry. In the coming years, he plans to expand his own knowledge in artificial intelligence and how it will impact financial services and the human capital that supports it, ensuring that he will remain a thought leader in his field for years to come.
