Mr. Villamar began his career as an electrical engineer at General Dynamics from 1986 to 1987. He then joined Hughes Aircraft Company, where he worked on the advanced tactical fighter YF-22 program designing the flight computer and Common Integrated Processor (CIP). Later, he moved on to research and development, where he developed the first working software-defined radio (SDR), serving as Technical Staff I from 1987 until 1990 and Digital Receiver Program Technical Staff II from 1990 to 1994. Following this, he worked as an engineering consultant at Kurtis & Associates PC from 1994 to 1995 before becoming a patent examiner in the digital signal processing group at the United States Patent and Trademark Office from 1995 until 1996.
In 1996, Mr. Villamar transitioned into patent law practice, joining Oblon, Spivak, McClelland, Maier & Neustadt PC as a patent attorney until 2001. He continued his legal career at Ditthavong & Mori PC from 2001 to 2003 and then at Nixon Peabody LLP from 2003 to 2007. During his tenure at Nixon Peabody LLP, he successfully secured the release of a falsely incarcerated immigrant through pro bono work, allowing them to return to India and reunite with their family—a contribution he considers his most meaningful.
From 2007 to 2010, Mr. Villamar was a partner at RMSC Law before founding The Villamar Firm PLLC in 2010. In 2022, he co-founded Villamar & Guiliana LLP and continues to play a pivotal role in the firm.
Mr. Villamar's educational background laid the groundwork for his prolific career. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a focus on digital signal processing from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, in 1987, followed by a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering specializing in neural networks from California State University, Long Beach, in 1992. He subsequently earned a Juris Doctor in patent law from the George Washington University Law School in 1998.
Profoundly influencing Mr. Villamar's career was his military service as a pararescue candidate in the United States Air Force from 1978 to 1980. He attributes his success to the discipline and resilience instilled by his special operations training, having graduated from USAF Pararescue Indoctrination Training and Army Airborne School.
