She is currently the owner of Wisdom of the Earth Essential Oils, a company she co-founded near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Since the company's inception in 1998, she has been instrumental in steering it toward success, particularly after becoming the sole owner in 2019. After the retirement of her business partner, she rebranded the company and website, enhancing its contemporary appeal while maintaining the brand's original message.
Before co-founding Wisdom of the Earth Essential Oils, Ms. Gutierrez served as vice president of human resources and administration at Covance Inc. from 1991 to 1998, where she led a project that transformed a long-term leased office building into a unified and productive workspace. Her adept negotiation skills and meticulous attention to detail ensured the project was completed on time and within budget and with zero employee turnover, despite transitioning from a private office environment to one that was predominately open work spaces. This she attributed to obtaining significant employee input throughout the process. Earlier in her career, her roles included principal of human resources and administration at Laventhol & Horwath from 1988 to 1990, director of HR planning at Coopers & Lybrand from 1981 to 1988 and executive associate to the SVP for programs at the Educational Testing Service from 1971 to 1981.
In addition to her corporate roles, Ms. Gutierrez has been actively involved in various professional and community associations, including LinkedIn and the Santa Fe Networking Group. While in NM, she was also on the Board of the Santa Fe Farmers Market Institute, and volunteered at Los Golondrinas, a regional natural history museum. She attributes her professional success to her determination. She is driven by goals, results, quality and integrity, continually following through on her commitments.
Ms. Gutierrez's educational foundation has greatly contributed to her career success. She graduated summa cum laude from the College of New Jersey in 1976 with a Master of Arts in teaching, secondary education and English. Prior to that, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts, English and sociology from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania in 1971, graduating cum laude and recognized as one of five Outstanding Women of SRSC. Her academic pursuits also included coursework in organization and management theory at the Wharton School of Business, which is part of The University of Pennsylvania, from 1978 to 1981.
Ms. Gutierrez has also contributed to her industry through writing as the co-author of "Voices of Light, Voices of Love: Messages from the Plants and Trees," published by Balboa Press in 2016. Beyond her professional life, she particularly enjoys rural living and supporting small businesses, in addition to her love of reading, supporting local farmers markets, participating in community life, and supporting the Sedona International Film Festival.
Looking ahead, Ms. Gutierrez plans to pass Wisdom of the Earth Essential Oils on to capable successors who will continue the original vision and commitment to quality, and is considering potential board or advisory positions for her retirement. An avid writer, she aims to complete several book projects that combine her love for travel, wholistic living and storytelling. Among these are a coffee table book exploring intriguing place names and a work titled "The Wisdom of Stillness…Meditating With Essential Oils," which she has already begun.
