In addition to his role at Saint Mary's College of California, Mr. Cooper has served as the college director at COPA Soccer Training Center since 2024. He previously worked as the director of coaching at Walnut Creek Surf Soccer Club from 2018 to 2024 and as the associate director of coaching at Diablo Futbol Club from 2008 to 2012. He began his career as the assistant varsity boys' coach at Calabasas High School from 1999 to 2001.
Mr. Cooper's journey into coaching began during the early stages of Major League Soccer in 1996 when he was actively engaged in professional play with the A-League. A personal connection with the head coach at Saint Mary's College led to an opportunity for Mr. Cooper to join as an assistant coach after evaluating the team's performance. His early experiences as a karate instructor and youth soccer coach during college further honed his teaching and leadership skills.
Mr. Cooper's educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles, which he obtained in 1999. Beyond his academic work, he attributes his accomplishments to his ability to build up the potential of his colleagues, a factor he believes has significantly contributed to his team's success.
Throughout his career, Mr. Cooper has received numerous accolades in recognition of his accomplishments. He received the Represent Award in 2023 and was named Staff of the Year in 2018, West Region Coach of the Year three times and Conference Coach of the Year four times. He is also proud of coaching for the United States Maccabi teams, taking teams to the Pan American Games in Argentina and Israel. Dedicated to staying abreast of industry trends, he is a member of the United Soccer Coaches and serves on the board of directors for Cal North Soccer.
Born in Los Angeles, California, Mr. Cooper enjoys watching movies, exercising, hiking and spending time with his family. Looking ahead, he aims to elevate Saint Mary's College of California to new heights by reaching significant milestones, such as advancing to the Elite Eight and Final Four, securing additional conference titles and providing his team with opportunities similar to those he experienced.
