His academic pursuits culminated in a Doctor of Philosophy in agronomy from the University of Florida in 2022 with the support of the Fulbright institution and the Colombian government, through a Fulbright scholarship.. Before joining the University of Maine Cooperative Extension in 2022, Dr. Garzon worked in the animal nutrition laboratory at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and as a research assistant in animal sciences at UF/IFAS North Florida Research and Education Center. He also contributed as a support professional in the animal science curriculum at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, where he served as a graduate research and teaching assistant during his studies. His early career included roles such as a student assistant in pastures and forages at Universidad Nacional de Colombia, as well as internships in animal production at INIA Uruguay and forage management at Centro Agropecuario Marengo.
Dr. Garzon's expertise in forage management is widely recognized, earning him memberships in several industry-related organizations. These include the National Association of County Agricultural Agents, the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America, and the Golden Key International Honor Society. His dedication to his field is further evidenced by awards such as the 2023 Gerald O. Mott Award from the Crop Science Society of America and the 2022 Finish Line Award and the 2018 and 2019 Grinter Award from the University of Florida.
In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Garzon is actively involved in civic-minded organizations, including volunteering with the Bangor Humane Society. Previously, he volunteered with Instituto Distrital de Protección y Bienestar Animal, cared for wildlife newborn animals at Unidad de Rescate y Rehabilitación de Animales Silvestres, and engaged in pedagogy at Centro de Rehabilitación Nacional in Bogota.
Born in Bogota, Colombia, Dr. Garzon's passion for animal sciences was influenced by memorable vacations on his grandfather's farm, where he engaged in activities like horseback riding, cattle herding, and fruit harvesting with his grandmother. These experiences, coupled with his mother's advice to pursue a profession that feels like a perpetual vacation, guided him toward a career in animal science.
Looking ahead, Dr. Garzon aspires to remain in the United States and continue collaborating with producers to expand his extension program. He envisions sustaining annual events such as the Maine Hay Contest and Maine Forage Conference. Additionally, he plans to initiate an internship program between Latin America and the United States.
