Dr. Steven M. Dranoff Recognized for Excellence in the Field of Psychology

With more than 50 years of experience in psychology and psychoanalysis, Dr. Dranoff has found success as the president of D&D Consultants. In addition to his work at D&D Consultants, Dr. Dranoff serves as a co-founder and director of the Center for Empathy Research and Training at Fairleigh Dickinson University, which provides assessment and training in empathy to a wide range of clients, including hospitals, religious groups, organizations and corporations, major public school districts and colleges. Having initially entered private practice in 1981, through which he has conducted treatment on behalf of adolescents, adults and couples, he has also distinguished himself as a field supervisor for the doctoral program in clinical psychology at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, for two decades.

Dr. Dranoff hails from a rich history of collaboration with numerous organizations, including several positions of high leadership at regional mental health centers – to wit, he served as director of the Community Mental Health Center in Clifton, New Jersey, where he worked closely with the local community to address mental health challenges. He has also contributed to numerous educational institutions, working as the director of the Counseling Center & Psychological Services at William Paterson University, a field supervisor at the psychological clinic at Rutgers, and a co-founder of the Psychoanalytic Institute for the Contemporary Center for Advanced Psychoanalytic Studies at Fairleigh Dickinson University. He also availed himself as co-chairman of the anti-bullying committee of the New Jersey Psychological Association, among many other prominent roles to his credit.

Well-regarded for his innumerable contributions to the field, Dr. Dranoff is the co-author of "The First Line of Defense" and "The Manager's Guide to Preventing a Hostile Work Environment," as well as several important white papers that have exerted considerable influence in his discipline. He has also spearheaded the "Risky Business Development Series," a web-based program that aims to reduce bullying, sexual harassment and violence in various settings, including school systems in a number of states. Additionally, Dr. Dranoff has been called upon to serve as a public speaker via various media outlets, while his collaborations with notable figures, such as Anita Hill, have left an indelible mark.

After earning a master's degree in psychology at New York University, Dr. Dranoff went on to attend Fordham University, from which he attained a doctorate in school psychology in 1983. Following this accomplishment, he sought postdoctoral certification in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis at the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health in New York and in supervision of the psychotherapeutic process at the Contemporary Center for Advanced Psychoanalytic Studies.

To commemorate his abundant accomplishments, Dr. Dranoff has received numerous accolades. Among them, he earned the Mega-Conference on Technology Award in 2004, an AURORA Gold Award in 2002, the Willis North American Book of the Year Award in 2002 and a CINDY Gold Award in 2001. Additionally, he has been bestowed with several awards as a result of his involvement with the Contemporary Center for Advanced Psychoanalytic Studies at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Fordham University and the New Jersey Psychological Association.

Though his professional journey has been filled with highlights, Dr. Dranoff is most proud of the impact his written works and programs have exerted on the wider field. In accounting for his success, he largely credits the love and support of his close-knit family. His two sons, Kevin and Erik, have grown up to be sociable and intelligent individuals. Kevin has led an impressive career as a filmmaker and is now attending Fairleigh Dickenson University Graduate School of Social Work. Erik is a clinical and forensic psychologist. Looking toward the future, Dr. Dranoff aims to continue developing innovative assessment methods that can further enhance empathy in others, with the ultimate goal of addressing the widespread issues that stem from anger, conflict and aggression.
