Shaped by his early experiences in a small farming town in New Mexico, Mr. Acosta was inspired by his uncle, an electrical engineer, who encouraged him to pursue technical work. As a child, he also fostered a passion for baseball throughout his life until a debilitating elbow injury changed his career path. Driven to serve his country, Mr. Acosta joined the U.S. Navy in 1979 as a Petty Officer specializing in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program and serving onboard nuclear-powered submarines.
Upon retiring from the U.S. Navy in 2000, Mr. Acosta started his second career with Arizona Public Service (APS) as a nuclear auxiliary operator. Over the years, he grew at Palo Verde Generating Station (PVGS), training engineers and management leaders, then licensed operators as an Operations Licensed Continuing Senior Instructor. He created and executed an engineering continuing training course on "maintaining an effective technical conscience" and instructed the Palo Verde Management Certification program from 2013 until 2014. Drawing on his considerable expertise, Mr. Acosta trains Operations Crews in the Control Room Simulator and classroom.
An expert in his field, Mr. Acosta was recognized as a Master Training Specialist through the U.S. Navy and earned an Associate of Arts from Columbia College and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology from Thomas Edison State University. Subsequently, he expanded his professional knowledge by completing several certifications through the Arizona Department of Education, the Palo Verde Generating Station, and the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO). In conjunction with his professional endeavors, Mr. Acosta contributes to his community as the boy's junior baseball coach with the Goodyear Little League, promotes Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) during the Aguila Youth Leadership Institute and Earn to Learn summer symposiums and workshops, supports the Honoring Americas Veterans (HAV) organization and coordinates the APS/PVGS parade entry for the Phoenix Veterans Day Parade.
Given his professional accomplishments, Mr. Acosta was awarded several U.S. Navy Achievement Medals and a Commendation Medal, the Arnold Fletcher Award from Thomas Edison State College, and two Arizona Public Service Living the Vision Awards. While his career has been filled with highlights, he takes the most pride in raising wonderful children. Though hard work and dedication have brought him far in his career, he credits his success to the lessons he learned throughout his life and his faith in Christ.
