Through this appointment, he was afforded opportunities to teach internationally as a visiting professor at the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Trieste, Italy, where he taught a diverse array of students worldwide about yeast genetics and molecular biology to pass down his legacy and guide forthcoming generations of scientists, educators and business executives.
Previously, Dr. Esposito served as a tenured associate professor and chair pro-tem in the biology department at the University of Chicago and was a member of the genetics granting awards committee of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for five years. Likewise, Dr. Esposito was recognized as a visiting professor in the biology department of the University of Paris' Orsay Center in Paris, France, training predoctoral genetic students. Moreover, he served as an NIH postdoctoral fellow for two years at the University of Wisconsin.
Distinguished as a trailblazer in his profession, Dr. Esposito pioneered pacesetting techniques to identify and analyze REC, REM and SPO genes that govern genetic mutability, recombination, meiosis and sporulation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Several of these genes have counterparts in the human genome and are involved in several human diseases, such as Xeroderma pigmentosum and breast cancer. Dr. Esposito's scientific contributions are widely documented, and his expertise extends to scholarly research. To wit, he was a founding associate editor of Current Genetics, a peer-reviewed scientific journal, and an associate member of Sigma Xi. Civically engaged as well, Dr. Esposito has worked with the Citizens Advisory Group in Richmond, California, having previously served as the chair of its toxicology committee, where he consulted on environmental safety and toxicology assessments at landfills.
Highly educated, Dr. Esposito pursued a formal education at Brooklyn College, earning a bachelor's degree in biology. Subsequently, he attained a Doctor of Philosophy in genetics from the University of Washington, Seattle. Shortly thereafter, he completed his postdoctoral work in the molecular biology department at the University of Wisconsin.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Esposito aims to continue his scientific research in gene mutation and recombination processes in eukaryotic organisms. Married to his wife Glenys, they share three children: Mara, Jennifer and Stefan. He also has seven grandchildren.
