Carycruz Miriam Bueno, PhD, honored for her expert leadership in economics and education research



Dr. Bueno is one of only four Black American women to earn a PhD in Economics in 2019, a significant milestone in a field traditionally dominated by white males.

    CRANSTON, RI, August 15, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Carycruz Miriam Bueno, PhD, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Bueno is an esteemed assistant professor at Wesleyan University, where she has been imparting knowledge and conducting research since 2021. An applied microeconomist with a specialization in labor, education and inequality economics, she has established herself as a significant figure in her field. Prior to her current position, she served as a postdoctoral research associate at Brown University from 2019 to 2021. Her earlier experiences include working as a research assistant at Georgia State University from 2013 to 2019, where she assisted Jonathan Smith and Tim Sass and contributed to various projects, including the Georgia Policy Lab for Education. Additionally, she was a research assistant with the First in the World Grant Research at Spelman College in 2016. Her initial foray into education was as a seventh-grade math special education teacher with Teach for America Hawaii at Wahiawa Middle School from 2010 to 2012.

Throughout her career, Dr. Bueno has achieved numerous accolades that underscore her contributions to economics and education policy. Notably, she is one of only four Black American women to earn a PhD in Economics in 2019, a significant milestone in a field traditionally dominated by white males. Her scholarly achievements include academic publications in The Review of Black Political Economy and AERA Open as well as a chapter in the influential book "The Black Agenda Bold Solutions for a Broken System". She is also an active member of several professional organizations such as the American Society of Hispanic Economists, the National Economic Association, the American Economic Association, the Association for Education Finance and Policy and the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management.

Dr. Bueno's journey in academia began with a Bachelor of Arts in economics, and a minor in math and romance languages from Mount Holyoke College in 2010. During her time at Mount Holyoke College, she participated in the American Economic Association's summer training program in Santa Barbara, California. She furthered her education with a post-baccalaureate in special education and teaching from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2012 and obtained her PhD in economics from Georgia State University in 2019.

Dr. Bueno's dedication extends beyond academia into civic engagement. She serves on the executive committee and advisory council for the MIT Charter School Research Collaborative and is a research affiliate with both the Annenberg Institute at Brown University and the Georgia Policy Lab for Education. Her work has been recognized through various awards, including the Emerging Education Policy Scholars in 2021, the NBER Summer Institute Fellowship in 2020, the Carole Keels Endowed Scholarship in 2019 and multiple grants from the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Bueno attributes much of her success to the unwavering support of her family and the encouragement of academic mentors, particularly during her time at Georgia State University and from the Black and Latino economist community. This support network has been instrumental in her journey to becoming a distinguished scholar and educator.

Outside of her professional life, Dr. Bueno enjoys spending time with her husband, three children, and family. She is passionate about helping communities of color to build wealth and aims to enhance her reputation as a prominent researcher in economics and education policy over the coming years.
