Well-regarded as a talented executive in the areas of corporate strategy, asset evaluation and revenue growth, his experience in the field has spanned multiple disciplines and encompassed the management of several projects in the realms of immunology, oncology, rare diseases and more. Currently serving as a senior director of business development at PTC Therapeutics Inc., a pioneer in pharmaceutical science and drug research, Dr. Amrani's role involves the analysis of various companies and therapeutic products for potential acquisition or licensing. He also collaborates with the research & development and clinical teams to develop the value proposition of assets for potential divestment or partnerships with other companies. His responsibilities cover both in-licensing of drugs or acquisition of companies, as well as out-licensing of drugs, partnering, co-developing drugs, and developing platforms for new drug discovery and development. Outside of his work in this capacity, he has also availed himself to the wider industry as an independent consultant in the area of mergers and acquisitions in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology space.
Though he initially considered a career in engineering, Dr. Amrani studied locally at the University of Algiers, where he earned a Doctor of Pharmacy in 1996. Graduating as valedictorian of his class, he distinguished himself by helping to establish the Algiers Pharmacy Students Association and won a competition to pursue a doctorate in immunology in France. He subsequently attended Pierre and Marie Curie University, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science in molecular biology in 1997, a Master of Science in immunology in 1998, and a PhD in 2002, conducting his PhD work on "B Lymphocytes' Immunoglobulin Repertoire Diversification" in the Immunology Department of The Pasteur Institute, and publishing two peer-reviewed articles as a first author. During his time as a PhD student, he was also a Teaching Assistant in the M. Sc Immunology program, and won several research funding scholarships.
Following this period, Dr. Amrani undertook a postdoctoral research fellowship, with support from The French Foundation for Medical Research at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he designed experimental models in immunology. He later joined the Immunology Department at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center as a research scholar, where his work led to publishing another 1st author peer-reviewed article in the Journal of Experimental Medicine on hematopoietic and immune cells development. He concluded his postdoctoral research at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where he contributed to the characterization of hematopoietic stem cells, and was a co-author of an article and book chapter on hematopoietic stem cells development. Recognizing his ability to excel in multiple areas outside of pure science, he resolved to focus his efforts on the business side of the pharmaceutical industry.
To better aid in his corporate endeavors, Dr. Amrani attained an MBA in health care management, strategy, and decision sciences at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business after winning a merit scholarship and graduating in 2012. During the summer of 2011, he first worked at ZS Associates as an intern. Upon returning to school, he served as a ZS Ambassador to support campus recruiting efforts, before returning fulltime to ZS Associates, a leading pharmaceutical consultancy in 2012. Dr. Amrani advanced to become a manager and remained active with the company until 2016. During this time, he led several important projects, managed over $2.5 million in annual revenue, assessed strategic opportunities dealing with various therapeutic areas, and supported two global executive directors at a prominent biotech company.
After departing from ZS Associates, Dr. Amrani served as associate principal in the life science strategy consulting group of IQVIA from 2016 to 2020. Overseeing projects valued at over $2.5 million per year and a team of consultants, he was responsible for developing the value proposition of several therapeutics, including gene therapies and assessing the market penetration potential of several drugs, among other duties. Following this period, he went on to work as senior principal at Deallus, a global life science consultancy where he managed U.S. and global commercial strategy regarding many pharmaceutical projects.
Dr. Amrani subsequently joined Tris Pharma as the senior director of business development, and was active on the investment committee during this time, supporting the identification of in-licensing opportunities and developing business cases for assets' acquisition. He collaborated fruitfully with the research & development team to identify opportunities for internal drug development. In 2023, Dr. Amrani assumed his current role at PTC Therapeutics.
Besides his primary career roles, Dr. Amrani was a guest lecturer at the University of Southern California-School of Pharmacy, sharing his experience on how to establish the value of drugs in the marketplace. Additionally, as a commitment to his field, he played a pivotal role in the founding of the Algerian-American Scientists Association. He was a founding and board member of STAPA, The Pasteur Institute Young Researchers' Association, and founding and board member of the MSKCC post-doctoral association. He was also a member of the Research Fellow Advisory Council at MSKCC, contributing to improving post-doctoral researchers' work and living conditions.
Outside of his professional efforts, Dr. Amrani has set foot in over 40 countries across six continents, and is an avid runner, water skier and scuba diver with nearly 200 dives across several oceans and warm-water seas to his credit. Notably, he is a former member of the national swim team of Algeria. He has also participated numerous times in the New York City Marathon, with a personal best time of three hours and 19 minutes.
In accounting for his success, Dr. Amrani credits his resilience in the face of challenging circumstances, his reliability on behalf of colleagues, and ability to find energy from time spent with his two boys, Zakary and Elias. Looking ahead, he is determined to thrive in his business endeavors, and aims to continue driving growth and success in his industry for the foreseeable future, joining various corporate boards and potentially starting his own company or leading an emerging biotech.
