Hailing from a multifaceted career whose scope encompassed international experience in both the public and private sectors, he now serves as a lecturer at both Ohlone College and San Francisco Bay University.
Originally hailing from Afghanistan, Mr. Sabit first worked as an accountant for Citibank in San Francisco from 2000 to 2004, after which he availed himself as a business manager for the La Honda-Pescadero Unified School District, which he helped revitalize and improve its operational capacity until 2006. Following this accomplishment, he relocated overseas to work with the government of his home country. Initially contracted by the World Bank to serve as an advisor to the minister and director general of internal audits, he introduced modern accounting and auditing, executed various reform projects, and trained scores of government officials. He continued his career as the deputy minister of finance for revenues and customs at the Ministry of Finance from 2008 until 2010. An effective contributor to the fiscal and economic well-being of the country during this time, Mr. Sabit was a key member of the government's public financial management team. He initiated a modern tax and customs academy and implemented several reform and modernization projects in the economic and financial sector of the country aimed at sustainable economic growth and enhanced public services. He developed strategies to enhance government revenues, resulting in an increase in government revenues by nearly eightfold during his two terms as deputy minister of finance.
Well-regarded for his accomplishments, Mr. Sabit was appointed as the president and chief executive officer of the Pashtany Bank in 2010. Leading efforts to revive and modernize the state-owned institution, which had a historic record of failure and mismanagement, he worked to modernize banking operations, overhaul underperforming departments and maximize growth and productivity during his tenure, developing a multi-year strategy to accomplish his objectives. He also helped initiate and cofounded the Afghan Payment System, which functioned as a domestic transaction processing center for Afghan banks. Following this period, Mr. Sabit resumed his duties as deputy minister of finance for revenue and customs in 2013, and remained active in this capacity for two years, working closely with USAID, the IMF, the World Bank, and other multilateral development partners and donors on the country's economic program throughout this time.
In 2018 and 2022, respectively, Mr. Sabit embarked on his present roles in education at Ohlone College and San Francisco Bay University, where he teaches the various courses of economics, management, and business. He also began serving as a short-term economist at Integrity Global, a monitoring agent for the World Bank in Afghanistan until 2024, during which time he provided analytical support for the country's economic sector monitoring. Well-regarded as a subject matter expert, Mr. Sabit has written numerous articles and proposals regarding Afghanistan's economy that aptly reflect his deep understanding of economic issues, one of which was presented before the House of Lords in the United Kingdom in 2021.
Notably, Mr. Sabit has been recognized for his diverse accomplishments, including with a Presidential Award from Afghanistan. He was also inducted as an international fellow of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in 2019.
Mr. Sabit holds a Bachelor of Arts in accounting from Berea College, a Master of Public Administration from California State University East Bay, and a Master of Science in finance and economics from Paul and Virginia Engler College of Business at West Texas A&M University. In accounting for his overall success, Mr. Sabit acknowledges his broad academic training and critical mentorship as pivotal to his advancement.
In addition to his academic credentials, Mr. Sabit holds several industry certifications, including as a Project Management Professional via the Project Management Institute. Additionally, he remains actively involved in civic activities and has made significant contributions by tutoring local and newly arrived refugee youths.
