Additionally, Dr. Pate serves as a senior partner at Nexus Search Partners, where he continues to influence the field with his extensive knowledge and experience.
From 2016 to 2020, Dr. Pate was the director of inclusion and diversity for worldwide operations at Amazon. In this role, he managed a vast network of infrastructure and approximately 1 million employees, ensuring that diversity and inclusivity were integral to the company's operations. Prior to his tenure at Amazon, he was vice president at Avanade from 2011 to 2016. During this period, he established an executive mentoring program that played a pivotal role in the career advancement of several individuals, including Pamela Maynard, who later became the CEO of Avanade.
Dr. Pate's career also includes significant contributions as principal of Pate Consulting & Associates LLC from 2008 to 2011. He previously served as director of diversity and inclusion at Starbucks from 2005 to 2008, where he implemented numerous initiatives to foster a more inclusive workplace. His journey in promoting diversity began at Microsoft, where he was the director of diversity from 2000 to 2006. One of his proudest achievements during this time was co-founding the Microsoft Women's Conference, which remains a thriving initiative today.
Driven by a passion for helping others and a commitment to fairness, Dr. Pate is an active member of several industry-related organizations. He serves on the board of the Institute for Sustainable Diversity and Inclusion and is a trustee of the Microsoft Alumni Network Board. Furthermore, his contributions extend beyond his professional endeavors into creative projects and publications – to wit, he is the author of "Daily Practices of Inclusive Leaders: A Guide to Building a Culture of Belonging," published by Berrett-Koehler Publishing. This work provides practical insights into fostering inclusive environments within organizations.
Dr. Pate's academic background laid a strong foundation for his career in ID&E. Initially studying wildlife management at Humboldt State University, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1987, he went on to graduate with a master's degree in sociology in 1993. Following this accomplishment, he attended the University of Washington years later and attained a PhD in sociology, with a focus on comparative race and ethnic relations and social psychology, in 2000.
Outside of his primary endeavors, Dr. Pate enjoys photography, traveling, and working out during his leisure time. He is dedicated to being a supportive father to his two children and looks forward to exploring new destinations around the world with his spouse. In the coming years, he aims to continue expanding his knowledge through travel while further developing his passion for writing with plans for additional publications. He also intends to maintain an influential presence in his field by continuing to speak, write, and lecture extensively.
