Dr. Ervay served in the U.S. Army and National Guard between 1956 and 1966. He was honorably discharged as a captain. He earned the Bachelor of Arts in Education, majoring in social science and journalism from Arizona State University in 1961. He later earned the Master of Educational Administration Degree from the University of North Texas. He was a high school and middle school social studies teacher between 1963 and 1969. Upon graduating with his doctoral degree in 1971, Dr. Ervay joined Emporia State University as a professor, teaching graduate courses in curriculum and instruction for over 40 years.
Throughout his tenure with Emporia State University, where he became an emeritus professor in 2014, Dr. Ervay founded the nonprofit Curriculum Leadership Institute (CLI), partnering with local school districts to develop curriculum as the foundation for learning. As chief executive officer, he chaired meetings of the CLI Board and networks between the organization and the larger educational environment that the organization serves. Dr. Ervay's commitment to staying abreast of changes in the field, demonstrated by his alignment with the AARP Kansas Executive Council and the Association of Teacher Educators, reassures us of his strong leadership in the field.
