Ms. Sweat's career began in 1995, serving as a law clerk at the South Carolina Department of Transportation. She then served as a judge advocate in the United States Air Force for seven years, starting in 1997, where she earned the Meritorious Service Medal from both the United States Air Force and the Department of Defense. Following her military service, Ms. Sweat joined the National Credit Union Administration as a staff attorney from 2005 to 2010. Her expertise led her to become the director of consumer compliance policy and outreach at the same organization between 2010 and 2014.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Ms. Sweat pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Science in computer science from the University of South Carolina in 1994 and a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1997. She later obtained an Associate of Science in business administration from the College of Southern Maryland in 2018, followed by a Master of Business Administration from the University of Maryland Global Campus in 2019. Additionally, Ms. Sweat holds a certificate in business management from the College of Southern Maryland.
Ms. Sweat's devotion to law is evident in her numerous professional credentials, including bar admissions in South Carolina, the District of Columbia and Maryland. She is also a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and holds membership with the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States and the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, along with other federal courts.
Long dedicated to civic advocacy, Ms. Sweat served as the vice president of the South County Economic Development Association from 2020 to 2022, and the Coalition for Public Safety Training in Schools Inc. board from 2019 to 2021. She also held the role of vice president for advocacy at the Maryland PTA from 2019 to 2021 and, starting in 2014, has served as director and treasurer of the Manning Overlook Homeowners Association. Ms. Sweat's previous roles include president of PTSA of the Oxon Hill HS Clippers Inc. from 2017 to 2019 and director at YoungLivesDC from 2007 to 2010.
Ms. Sweat's career is distinguished by a variety of accolades, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Maryland PTA in 2020. She was also honored as a Presidential Scholar at the University of Maryland Global Campus in 2019 and received recognition from Cambridge Who's Who Empowering Executives, Professionals and Entrepreneurs in 2008. Additionally, Ms. Sweat was recognized as a Veteran Scholar by the College of Southern Maryland and has received several federal service awards throughout her occupational journey.
Outside her professional life, Ms. Sweat enjoys reading, camping, traveling and following college sports. As she plans for retirement, she also looks forward to potentially returning to public office within the next decade.
