Dr. Youssef is a distinguished expert in psychiatry and behavioral medicine who has been affiliated with Michigan State University & Pine Rest. Since 2023, he has served as the vice president for research and the director of the psychiatry and behavioral medicine division at Pine Rest & Michigan State University in Grand Rapids. Additionally, he holds the title of professor of psychiatry at Michigan State University. Dr. Youssef's extensive career as a foremost physician neuroscientist reflects a profound commitment to advancing mental health care through clinical practice, research and education. He is best known for his contributions to brain stimulation, neuromodulation and genomic medicine for studying diagnostic biomarkers and improved therapeutics for resistant neuropsychiatric disorders.

Before being recruited to Michigan, Dr. Youssef was a professor of psychiatry and director of clinical research in the psychiatry and behavioral health department at The Ohio State University from 2021 to 2023. He also served as the chief of outpatient services for the U.S. Army from 2020 to 2021, demonstrating his dedication to serving civilian and military populations. From 2015 to 2020, Dr. Youssef directed the mood and trauma clinic and research lab at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta University, where he was also a professor at the Medical College of Georgia and a professor at the graduate school between 2013 and 2021. Simultaneously, he directed inpatient and acute psychiatric services at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Augusta from 2013 to 2015.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Youssef was a research associate and clinical associate at Duke University in Durham from 2009 to 2013, following his tenure as a research fellow at the Durham Veterans Affairs Health Care System and Duke University between 2009 and 2012.

Dr. Youssef's academic journey began with a Doctor of Medicine from Cairo University in 1995, followed by a residency in psychiatry at the University of South Alabama in 2004. He furthered his expertise with a Doctor of Philosophy in neuromodulation and genomics from Maastricht University in Maastricht, Netherlands, in 2020. These academic achievements have been instrumental in Dr. Youssef's success, providing a robust foundation for his clinical and research endeavors.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Youssef is an active member of several industry-related organizations, including the Society of Biological Psychiatry, the International Neuromodulation Society, the International Society of Electrophysiology and the National Network of Depression Centers. These affiliations underscore his commitment to staying at the forefront of advancements in mental health care.

As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Youssef has served as a principal investigator on several studies and clinical trials (funded by NIH, VA, DOD and scientific foundations), including transcranial magnetic stimulation, magnetic seizure therapy, electroconvulsive therapy and more. He has contributed over 250 manuscripts including scholarly journal articles and edited two books, "Neuromodulation in Basic, Translational and Clinical Research in Psychiatry" and "Epigenetics of Stress, and Stress Disorders." Furthermore, Dr. Youssef has lectured nationally and internationally, interviewed in newspapers, and featured on several television and radio shows.
