Prior to his current position, Dr. Watson held several key roles that shaped his career trajectory. From 2022 to 2023, he was the acting assistant director for the City of Oakland after being promoted from recreation general manager, where he served from 2019 to 2023. For the preceding three years, he contributed to the City of San Leandro as a recreation supervisor II. Before this role, he began his service to the City of Oakland as the recreation center director from 2007 to 2016 and a librarian and physical education instructor at Oakland Unified School District from 2005 to 2007.
Serving as a foundation for his professional endeavors, Dr. Watson earned a Bachelor of Science in politics from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2001. He later pursued a Doctorate of Divinity from the Institute of Divine Metaphysical Research, Inc. Beyond formal education, he attributes his success to his unwavering commitment and work ethic. He also emphasizes diligence, dedication, humility, adaptability and learning from every opportunity, having been inspired by his late grandfather's character.
Dr. Watson also holds several certifications that underscore his expertise and dedication to his field. He is a certified park and recreation professional through the National Recreation and Park Association and has completed SafeSport training with the U.S. Center for SafeSport. Additionally, he holds a certification in leadership and management from Alameda County Leadership Academy and is a licensed U.S. soccer referee with the U.S. Soccer Federation.
Throughout his career, Dr. Watson has been recognized for his contributions with various awards, including being named the Young Administrator of the Year by the National Forum for Black Public Administrators in 2015. Further testament to his expertise are his memberships in several prestigious organizations, such as the National Recreation and Park Ethnic Minority Society, the National Recreation and Parks Association, the California Parks and Recreation Society and the University of California Santa Cruz Alumni Association.
Dr. Watson's most significant accomplishment has been establishing a new environmentally sustainable facility in an underserved community. This 25,000-square-foot facility features a gym, indoor pool with water slide and studio, built from scratch with limited initial resources. Witnessing its growth to serve thousands of community members each year has been truly fulfilling for him.
Outside his professional life, Dr. Watson enjoys hiking, walking and playing soccer with his family. He also serves in a civic capacity in his free time, volunteering as a business coach for ESO Ventures and previously being involved with the YMCA of the East Bay as the youth, families and residential services director. Additionally, he has been a board member at the Institute of Divine Metaphysical Research since 2001.
Looking ahead, Dr. Watson envisions contributing to his community in meaningful ways by building new facilities like parks and recreational spaces that can be enjoyed by future generations. He is eagerly anticipating significant projects in Santa Rosa, including developing a central park on a recently acquired 70-plus-acre site from Caltrans. This park will connect different parts of the community and provide an area for people to enjoy nature, sports and leisure activities.
