Dr. O'Young is a board-certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) physician specializing in pain medicine in Philadelphia with over 30 years of expertise. Having been recruited to Temple Health in 2020 as a Full Professor and staff physician, he serves as the chief of outpatient PM&R services at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Temple University Hospital. As a full professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, vice chair for education, medical student clerkship director, chair of the education committee, as well as chair of the promotions and awards committee at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, Dr. O'Young treasures teaching medical students, residents, and fellows. He has been teaching for over three decades. He is a clinical professor at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, an adjunct clinical professor at the Weill Cornell College of Medicine, a visiting professor at the Peking University and Sun Yat-Sen University in China, and an adjunct professor at the University of the Philippines. He was formerly affiliated with Johns Hopkins University, Capital Medical University (China), and the University of the East (Philippines). Before joining Temple University, he was the director of pain management in the Department of PM&R at the Geisinger Health System. He was pivotal in establishing the Geisinger Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency program and was the inaugural residency program director. The Geisinger PM&R Residents awarded him the Pioneer Award, a distinction reserved only for those with an altruistic commitment to initiating novel and innovative programs in medical education.
Taking tremendous pride in helping patients regain control over chronic pain, Dr. O'Young' s holistic approach to medicine includes striving to minimize medication reliance by identifying pain patterns, providing education, offering various effective control strategies, and focusing on the meaning of life. His work is truly revolutionary and unique.
Throughout his distinguished medical career, Dr. O'Young has conducted over 420 regional, national, and international lectures, accumulating over 300 international presentations on various topics, including education, integrative medicine, and pain management, across 27 countries, including 66 in China. He has also facilitated numerous faculty members from New York University and Cornell University to engage with the United Nations, providing them opportunities to present at the organization. He has been the chief editor of the famous first (1997), second (2002), third (2008), and fourth (2023) guidebooks, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Secrets, which has been widely read internationally and has been published in five languages. Additionally, Dr. O'Young has been featured in a YouTube video on Conceptual Framework of Chronic Pain: Finding the Solutions from Within from the New York Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for his expertise. Looking toward the future, he aims to expand his work internationally, particularly in collaboration with the United Nations, and make a broader impact on the medical field.
Civically, Dr. O'Young has been involved in global efforts, mostly involving advocacy for individuals with disabilities, addressing chronic pain, and contributing to the education of the next generation in physical and rehabilitation medicine. Among other involvements, he participates regularly as the chair of the health sessions at the biannual Windsor Dialogue Series held at the Windsor Castle in England hosted by the International Council for Caring Communities as part of the UN/UN partners think tank to address global issues and support the Sustainable Development Goals (2030). He also coordinated numerous events with other organizations supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 at the United Nations and academic institutions globally. The most recent event in 2023 was on December 3, 2023, in collaboration with the ISPRM, International Council for Caring Communities (ICCC), and Chulalongkorn University (Bangkok, Thailand) to commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
In preparation for his career, Dr. O'Young graduated salutatorian from Niles North High School, summa cum laude from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Arts in biology with a concentration in neuroscience in 1985, Washington University with a Doctor of Medicine in 1989, and a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Hospitals and Clinics in 1993. He received a license to practice medicine in Pennsylvania and New York and holds board certification in physical medicine and rehabilitation and in pain medicine. He is also a certified physician acupuncturist.
As part of his ongoing commitments to medicine, Dr. O'Young has been appointed as the chair of the International Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ISPRM) UN Liaison Committee, former chair of the International Exchange Committee of the ISPRM, and former chair of the Assembly of Individual Members of the ISPRM. He is an elected member of the executive committee of the ISPRM and an ISPRM representative of the Assembly of Individual Members to the Assembly of Delegates. He had served as the president of the American Academy of Thermology and the Philippines Chinese American Medical Association. He has also been active with several other professional organizations, such as the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the Association of Academic Physiatrists, the Federation of Chinese American and Chinese Canadian Medical Societies, the Chinese American Medical Society, and the Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Associations.
Honoring his work, Dr. O'Young numerous awards for international work presented at the United Nations, including the educational award from the then Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, NYU Medical Center, during the celebration of the then Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine 50th Anniversary/World Health Organization 50th Anniversary for outstanding educational contribution (1998) and the International Visionary Award for convening physicians to collaborate on initiatives for individuals with disabilities supporting the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development from the ICCC, a UN NGO (2023). He was the first Rusk Without Walls Award recipient for international educational contributions from the then Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, NYU Langone Medical Center (2009). He also received the coveted Haim Ring Memorial Award from the ISPRM (2011) for exceptional accomplishments in promoting international educational visits and exchanges for physicians globally.
Dr. O'Young is married to Fangfang O'Young, whose love and nurturing revitalizes his soul. He has three children: Aaron (10 years old), Serena (8 years old), and Lucas (7 years old), whose unbridled energy, boundless affection, unceasing curiosity, and wholesome innocence invigorates his spirit to embrace the moment.
