ALEXANDRIA, VA, August 30, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Orest J. Glembocki, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Glembocki is a distinguished physicist and educator who dedicated over 30 years to the Naval Research Laboratory, where he made significant contributions to semiconductor physics and optical detection technologies. Following his tenure, he joined Vanderbilt University, teaching as an adjunct professor in the school of engineering from 2019 to 2022. During this period, Dr. Glembocki revamped a material science course and taught Material Science I and II.

Having begun his career at the laboratory as a postdoctoral researcher in 1982, Dr. Glembocki transitioned to a permanent position where he remained for decades. In 2016, he retired as a senior scientist and research physicist. During his tenure, Dr. Glembocki was instrumental in developing programs that garnered interest from the U.S. Navy and the broader scientific community. His work focused on detecting and tracing explosives and biochemicals, particularly after September 11, 2001.

One of Dr. Glembocki's most notable achievements came early in his career with his introduction of the innovative optical technique of photoreflectance for the study of the electronic states of semiconductor multilayer systems and heterojuctions. These included superlattice, quantum wells and 2 dimensional electron gas heterostructures. The experimental and theoretical work of Dr. Glembocki and his collaborators allowed researchers to examine new semiconductor materials and accurately identify their electronic structure. This groundbreaking work was published in numerous articles in the 1980's and 1990's and attracted the attention of industry leaders, such as Hewlett-Packard and Raytheon.

Dr. Glembocki's postdoctoral research focused on optically studying the electrochemical and chemical etching of silicon, resulting in models that explained surface modifications during etching processes. These findings were published in a series of articles in the early 1980s and have had a lasting impact on the field.

In addition, after 2001, his pioneering work with metamaterials, enabled the application of Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering techniques for detecting trace chemicals and at standoff distances. Collaborating with Oakridge National Laboratories and the DOJ, he played a crucial role in identifying fingerprint oils from rough surfaces, a breakthrough widely recognized and cited in scientific literature. This work also enabled the identification of any chemical residue in the fingerprint. Additionally, Dr. Glembocki assembled teams of researchers to study metamaterials and utilized Raman Scattering techniques to detect minuscule amounts of previously undetectable substances. This led to a significant metamaterials program that ran in parallel to another initiative at the NRL NanoScience Institute on infrared nanomaterials.

In preparation for his career, Dr. Glembocki received a Bachelor of Science from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute of New York, a Master of Science in physics from Brooklyn College and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics from the City University of New York.

Dr. Glembocki is a professional member of the Materials Research Society and was elected a fellow of the American Physical Society in 1996 in recognition of his work on photoreflectance. As a seasoned researcher, he has also published over 300 articles, cited approximately 9,000 times, underscoring his influence in the scientific community.

In light of his success, Dr. Glembocki has been recognized with several awards, including the Basic Science Award from the Naval Research Laboratory Edison Chapter of the National Sigma Xi society in 2015. He also received several NRL, Berman Best paper awards. Looking ahead, he aims to engage more with students and younger individuals, guiding them through life using the knowledge gained from his extensive research and experiences.
