Before establishing Aglet Strategies, Ms. Simmons worked as the vice president of digital at FitzGibbon Media from 2014 to 2015. She played a key role as a program officer focused on gun violence prevention and digital capacity building at The Joyce Foundation from 2013 to 2014. Furthermore, Ms. Simmons led the Second Chance Campaign and was the new media director for Mayors Against Illegal Guns (now known as Everytown for Gun Safety) from 2012 to 2013.
Ms. Simmons achieved success as the managing editor for Energy.gov at the U.S. Department of Energy from 2010 to 2012 and as the leader of online communications for the international anti-global poverty organization, the ONE Campaign, from 2006 to 2010. Earlier in her career, she worked as an associate at M+R Strategic Services, was a paralegal at the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, and completed an internship with Senator Russ Feingold in 2001 and 2002.
To prepare for her career, Ms. Simmons graduated with highest honors from Oyster River High School in Durham in 1999. While attending Georgetown University, she studied politics at Charles University in Prague in 2002 and earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and government, along with a minor in anthropology, from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., in 2003.
Ms. Simmons's dedication to civic engagement is demonstrated through her extensive volunteer efforts. She has provided tutoring to elementary school students with the organizations Reading Partners and Northstar Tutoring in Washington, D.C. Additionally, she has volunteered to help low-income individuals access food benefits at the Columbia Heights Farmers Market, assisted prisoners throughout the U.S. in obtaining books through DC Books to Prisons, and participated with the DC Snow Team in clearing walkways for disabled or elderly neighbors.
Ms. Simmons served on the National Steering Committee for Amnesty International's Program Abolish the Death Penalty in the U.S. from 2003 to 2006 and on the gun violence prevention organization Arms with Ethics/FORGE board from 2014 to 2020. Simmons presented on "Using Psychology to Understand Why and When People Donate (and Why and When They Don't)" at the Netroots Nation Conference in 2015.
One of her notable accomplishments was creating the first blog by a death row inmate in 2005, which brought national and international attention to his case and ultimately resulted in a last-minute stay of execution. In 2016, she played a crucial role in a team that helped free an innocent man who had been held without charge for over a decade at Guantanamo Bay. Ms. Simmons developed the strategy and coordinated efforts among major institutions to gather over 100,000 signatures from American citizens advocating for his release.
Among other accomplishments, Ms. Simmons enjoys creating humor cartoons. She has performed live comedy storytelling at Union Stage and the BlackCat in Washington, D.C., and was selected to perform her one-hour one-woman show at the Capital Fringe Festival in Washington, DC in 2023.
In 2023, Simmons established the Aglet Awards, an annual event aimed at honoring individuals nationwide who are quietly making significant contributions to worthy causes. This award offers a platform to express gratitude to those in their communities whose efforts might often be unnoticed.
