SILVERTHORNE, CO, September 04, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present John McMurtry with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, John McMurtry celebrates years of experience in his professional network and has been noted for achievements, leadership, credentials, and successes in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected based on current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Drawing on years of expertise in sports and nonprofit management, executive leadership, marketing, and partnership development, Mr. McMurtry served as the chief development officer, vice president of development, and director of development for Steadman Philippon Research Institute (SPRI) from 1994 until his retirement in 2017. SPRI specializes in regenerative sports medicine, scientific research, innovation, and education. In his dual roles, Mr. McMurtry oversaw program development and directed campaigns that raised millions of dollars for orthopedic sports medicine research.

Before the establishment of the Steadman Philippon Research Institute, Mr. McMurtry was alpine director, director of athlete development, women's development coach, and head technical coach for the women's World Cup and Olympic Alpine Ski Teams with U.S. Ski and Snowboard, the national governing body for snow sports. To foster athlete development, he organized the country into three regions: Eastern, Central, and Western. Each region conducted training camps and competitions for top junior talent and their coaches. Through these events, athletes were exposed to national team programs. Due to his dedication to athletic excellence, he witnessed several stellar performances at the World Junior Championships. Mr. McMurtry also gained valuable expertise as partner with founders J. Richard Steadman, M.D., Topper Hagerman, Ph.D., and John Atkins, M.S., of Sports Performance Orthopedics Research Training. Notably, he was also selected as part of the first U.S. ski industry delegation to visit the People's Republic of China in 1986.

Mr. McMurtry holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science with a minor in German language and literature from the University of Denver. Subsequently, he received an M.B.A. in marketing and finance from Westminster University's Bill and Vieve Gore School of Business and a Master of Arts in sports science from his undergraduate alma mater. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field and community, his participation includes the U.S. Ski Team Sports Medicine Council, the Colorado Planned Giving Roundtable, the International Skiing History Association, and Rotary International. Mr. McMurtry continues to contribute to his community as executive director of the Lake County Community Fund, as an executive committee member of the Journal of the International Skiing History Association, and a member of the Colorado Planned Giving Roundtable.

As a U.S. Ski Team coach, Mr. McMurtry helped athletes achieve World Cup titles, Olympic gold and silver medals, and the only Nation's Cup Award for any U.S. alpine ski team. November 13, 1982, was declared "John McMurtry Day" in Denver and Colorado by Governor Richard D. Lamm and Denver Mayor W.H. McNichols. Mr. McMurtry was inducted into the Colorado Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame, the United States National Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame, and Delta Mu Delta, an international business honor society. He was awarded the Distinguished President Citation by Rotary International President, Richard D. King in 2002, and the "Positively Leadville" recognition for "Exemplary Service to Our Lake County Community" in 2022.

Mr. McMurtry takes the most pride in coming together with his community in the wake of COVID-19. On March 14, 2020, Colorado Governor Jared Polis shut the state down to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. More than 70 percent of workers in Lake County lost their jobs and the ability to pay rent and utilities. Within six months, Mr. McMurtry and members of his community raised more than $700,000 to help local citizens pay for these critical services. The work of the Lake County community during this period was one of four in the U.S. featured in the April 27, 2021, article by the Urban Institute, "Eviction Prevention and Diversion Programs: Early Lessons from the Pandemic."

Mr. McMurtry credits his success to his parents, John and Virginia, his wife, Jeanette Maw McMurtry, and his mentors Robert Nelson, Willy Schaeffler, Marvin Clein, Ed.D., J. Richard Steadman, M.D., Topper Hagerman, Ph.D., and John Atkins, M.S., who have supported him over the years. He also notes that he would not be where he is today without daughters, Jordan June, Jessica Rose, and Jenevieve Virginia, and his siblings, Sherry, Caro, Kate, and Mike. Mr. McMurtry intends to continue serving others through the nonprofit sector and working with the Lake County Community Fund.
