Marquis Who's Who Honors Dr. Nigel Anthony Sellars for Expertise in Higher Education

    NEWPORT NEWS, VA, September 04, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Nigel Anthony Sellars has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Dr. Sellars, an esteemed historian and writer, has dedicated over 30 years to the fields of American labor history and popular culture. His career has been marked by significant contributions to academia and journalism. From 2000 to 2021, he served as an associate professor at Christopher Newport University, where he was instrumental in shaping the minds of future historians. Previously he worked as a history instructor and adjunct professor of journalism at the University of Oklahoma. Previously, he had distinguished himself as a reporter for the Moore Monitor, beginning in 1981 and Daily Oklahoman from 1984. He also served as managing editor of the Yukon Review newspaper.

Dr. Sellars' academic journey began at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology in 1977, followed by a Bachelor of Arts in journalism in 1980. He furthered his education with a Master of Arts in Journalism in 1985 and culminated his studies with a PhD in history in 1994.

Throughout his career, Dr. Sellars has been recognized for his scholarly contributions. He received the Donnell M. Owings Award from the Department of History at the University of Oklahoma in 1990, the Marshall Gregory Award from the Oklahoma Education Association in both 1986 and 1988, and the Carl Rogan Award from the Oklahoma New Editor and the Associated Press in 1987. Notably, his dissertation earned him the Best Dissertation Prize from the Oklahoma Historical Society and was later published as a book, Oil, Wheat & Wobblies: The Industrial Workers of the World in Oklahoma, 1905-1930 by the University of Oklahoma Press in 1998.

Dr. Sellars's expertise is further evidenced by his numerous publications. In addition to "Oil, Wheat &Wobblies, " his other notable works include "Treasonous Tenant Farmers and Seditious Sharecroppers: The 1917 Green Com Rebellion Trials," in the Oklahoma City University Law Review; Miners, and Wobblies," and "Cold, Hard Facts: Justice Brandeis and the Oklahoma Ice Case," in The Historian; and "Almost Helpless in the Wake of the Storm: The 1917 Spanish Flu Epidemic in Oklahoma, " in The Chronicles of Oklahoma. That article won the prestigious Muriel Wright Award for the Best Article to appear in the Chronicles in 2001. Additionally, he has contributed reviews and articles to professional journals including the American Historical Review, Journal of Southern History, Western Historical Quarterly, and the Missouri Historical Review. He also established The Sextant, an online scholarly journal to showcase the work of undergraduate history majors at Christopher Newport University.

Dr. Sellars is an active member of several relevant organizations, including the Organization of American Historians; Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor fraternity; the Western History Association; the Oklahoma Historical Association; the American Historical Association; and the Small Press Writers and Artists Organization and the Hampton Roads Writers. These connections have allowed him to stay connected with fellow historians and writers and contribute to ongoing scholarly discussions.

He has also published several works of fiction, including three novels and a short story collection. In his leisure time Dr. Sellars, who also plays guitar, enjoys folk music, cooking, writing, reading, and watching ice hockey. Look ahead, he aims to publish several books, both fiction and non-fiction, within the next few years.
