Sheryl-Ann Mullings-Black Recognized for Dedication to the Field of Higher Education

Sheryl-Ann Mullings-Black serves as the Manager of Academic Support Services at Florida International University



    MIRAMAR, FL, September 06, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sheryl-Ann Mullings-Black has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Long driven by a passion for changing the lives of others, Ms. Mullings-Black has found success as an academic support services manager at Florida International University, where she also serves as a senior advisor and adjunct instructor. In this capacity, she manages a team of advisors and student assistants, and teaches undergraduate classes. Having initially joined FIU in 2015, Ms. Mullings-Black previously served as a financial aid counselor at Nova Southeastern University and as an academic support coordinator for Union Institute & University. She took her first steps into the field of academia as a student accounts and loan manager at Saint Thomas University in 2001.

Throughout her career, Ms. Mullings-Black is most proud to have assisted her students in overcoming difficult situations so they can effectively complete their academic goals. In one memorable case, she ensured that a student facing a medical emergency had the support she needed to drop her classes, focus on her recovery, and graduate successfully. Ms. Mullings-Black remains dedicated to helping others achieve their goals, and her ability to serve as a source of support and guide to those facing the unknown has proven inspirational.

Well-regarded for her accomplishments, Ms. Mullings-Black has been a speaker and presenter at various conferences, including several held by the Florida Academic Advising Association, the National Academic Advising Association and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.

Adjacent to her primary endeavors in education, Ms. Mullings-Black also provides extensive support to the St. Hugh's Alumnae Association of Florida. While St. Hugh's High School is located in Kingston, Jamaica, SHAAFL operates as the school's alumni association in the United States. In this role, she serves as a mentor to students, offering peer and financial support to those embarking on their career journey can be better equipped to develop basic life skills as they approach adulthood.

Outside of education, Ms. Mullings-Black hails from nearly 16 years of experience in property management – particularly with homeowner association boards. To wit, she served as a community association officer and director for Foxcroft Condominium Inc., and was a co-owner and consultant of a property management service company for two years. In 2014, she also served as a volunteer financial coach with Hands on South Florida (nee Hands on Broward), where she assisted those in underrepresented communities. Ms. Mullings-Black was also an affiliate and volunteer with SMA South Florida (a SHRM chapter) from 2014-2020.

Having initially studied Business at Saint Thomas University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in 2007, Ms. Mullings-Black later received an MBA from Nova Southeastern University in 2010, also earning graduate certificates in Human Resource Management, and Leadership in 2012 and 2014, respectively. Additional upskilling credentials include micro-badges in Advising Leadership Fundamentals and Emotional Intelligence from FIU, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace from University of South Florida (USF), and most recently Academic Success Coaching in Higher Education from University of Central Florida (UCF).

As a testament to her accomplishments, Ms. Mullings-Black twice-divorced, credits her faith in Jesus Christ as a testament to her continued resilience. She considers her children (2-sets of twins) her greatest accomplishment whom she raised single handedly. All graduated college including FIU and USF. Ms. Mullings-Black was previously recognized by NSU as a Black History Month Phenomenal Woman Honoree in 2016, and was later hailed for her excellence in Advising Student Populations by the FIU Council for Undergraduate Academic Advising in 2022. In accounting for her success, she largely credits her faith as the main ability to establish meaningful connections, as well as using emotional intelligence techniques to be fully present and attentive when engaging with others.

Looking ahead, Ms. Mullings-Black is considering pursuing a terminal degree to enhance future career opportunities. Eager to advance further in her areas of expertise, she is open to exploring opportunities as a project manager and consultant in the years to come.
