Mr. Fitzgerald's expertise in grant management and economic development has been instrumental in transforming the SBDC network into one of the top-performing networks in the country, achieving an economic impact exceeding $1 billion in 2023 with a budget of just around $5.5 million.
Additionally, Mr. Fitzgerald serves as the executive director of the Center for Business Advancement at Southwestern College in San Diego, overseeing the San Diego, Orange, and Imperial Apex Accelerator, the San Diego & Imperial Women's Business Center (WBC), and is the fiscal agent for state funding of the 20 plus WBCs in California.
Mr. Fitzgerald's earlier roles included leading DJF Consulting as its principal and consultant between 2011 and 2016. He also worked as a specialist and economic development manager at Local Initiatives Support Corporation from 2014 to 2015 and as the manager and director of the Imperial Valley Enterprise Zone between 2013 and 2014. Moreover, Mr. Fitzgerald succeeded in leadership as the director of account services at Spectrum Advertising from 2006 to 2008, as an operations manager at Pioneer Van & Storage between 2004 and 2007 and as the vice president of sales at My Smart Benefits from 1999 to 2003.
In preparation for his career, Mr. Fitzgerald received a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Utah in 1995 and a Master of Arts in communication from San Diego State University in 1997.
In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Fitzgerald is actively involved in several industry-related and civic organizations. He has been serving as the president of the Southwestern Community College District Administrators Association since 2018 and as the commissioner for the Navajo Planning Group in San Diego since 2018. He has also been active as a board member of the California Association for Micro Enterprise Opportunity Network since 2024. Moreover, Mr. Fitzgerald has been involved with the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation, the Connect Foundation, the Lake Murray Music and Fireworks Festival organizing committee, and his local parent-teacher association.
