Subsequently, he garnered a Doctor of Philosophy in engineering geoscience from the University of California Berkeley in 1988. In addition to his academic credentials, Dr. Bartel earned certifications as a registered geophysicist from the State of California and the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists.
Beyond his primary professional endeavors, Dr. Bartel is an active member of several industry-related organizations, including the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, the Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists and the Geophysical Society of Houston. He is also recognized as the director emeritus of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Foundation and previously held positions as the organization's vice chair and board chair. For his service to the SEG Foundation Board he has been awarded the SEG Foundation Director's Award in 2024.
