SCOTIA, NY, September 11, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Andrew M. Hess, PhD, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Hess, a distinguished pediatric psychologist, has dedicated his career to caring for children struggling with a variety of conditions. He has made significant contributions to the field of child psychology working with several schools and hospitals. Dr. Hess initially worked for 10 years in several school districts in Upstate NY and the Berkshires as a school psychologist. A small part-time job doing computer based cognitive rehabilitation with young adults who had sustained a traumatic brain injury, quickly translated to a full time pediatric psychologist position at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital in Schenectady, NY. For nearly 30 years he evaluated and treated inpatient and outpatient children and teens who had sustained a traumatic brain injury or other neurologic condition, evaluated many outpatients for ADHD or other learning disabilities, and later many students with concussions not just from sport related injuries, but also bike, motor vehicle collisions, falls and assaults.
Reflecting on his career, Dr. Hess is most proud of his tenure as a clinician and administrator, roles he fulfilled over 30 years. During this period, he was deeply committed to clinical excellence, prioritizing meaningful connections with every individual who sought his services. The hospital where he worked served a diverse variety of patients from numerous cities and rural areas across upstate New York. Dr. Hess's compassionate care extended to families of Hispanic and Black heritage and those facing economic hardships. He particularly cherished the trust placed in him by Black grandmothers who entrusted their loved ones to his care.
Dr. Hess earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Psychology from the University of Albany in 1982. His academic journey also includes a certification in school psychology from the same institution. Beyond his education, he attributes much of his success to the work ethic instilled in him by his father, who despite not graduating from high school, demonstrated remarkable determination and resilience by working multiple jobs to support the family.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Hess has been actively involved in various civic organizations and contributes as a donor to international relief organizations. He served as a member of the Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern NY's Professional Advisory Committee for nearly 20 years. He also served as a Board Member of the New York State Brain Injury Association for six years and founded and co-chaired its Concussion Initiative. He continues to serve on the Legislative & Policy Subcommittee, advocating for comprehensive concussion management guidelines not just in school interscholastic sports, but across all competitive youth sports in NY State. He is very proud of the latter program, which fosters collaboration among key professionals and major medical centers across New York, promotes cooperation over competition and brings transformative change within the community.
Dr. Hess's contributions have been recognized with several awards. He has been granted the Albert J. Harris Award from the International Reading Association in 1984 for his dissertation research, and received accolades from both the Brain Injury Association and the Epilepsy Foundation.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Hess enjoys volunteering at the Library and Research Center at the Albany Institute of History & Art, studying early NY State history, reading, playing with 5 grandkids and traveling particularly to County Clare Ireland to visit his family and friends. He and his wife have plans to explore Scotland in the upcoming years. Looking ahead in a professional capacity, he intends to continue in his consulting work for another 6 months, then retire permanently (for the third time), allowing more time for reading and other adventures.
