Marquis Who's Who Honors Viswanath "Vish" Annampedu, PhD, for Expertise in Systems Architecture and Design

Viswanath "Vish" Annampedu, PhD, is lauded for his contributions to systems architecture at NVIDIA Corporation

His prolific contributions to signal processing, highlighted by nearly 20 journal and conference publications, have earned him extensive recognition within the industry.

PLANO, TX, September 12, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Viswanath "Vish" Annampedu, PhD, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Annampedu is a tenured professional in electrical engineering who has achieved significant success as a principal SerDes systems architect at NVIDIA Corporation, a publicly traded computer hardware manufacturer based in California. Bringing over 27 years of experience in his field, he has been with NVIDIA in Dallas since 2017.

At NVIDIA, Dr. Annampedu specializes in researching and developing SerDes (Serializer/Deserializer) architectures for various generations of Universal Physical Layer (UPHY) interfaces. SerDes technology converts data between serial and parallel forms and is vital to UPHY, which provides the foundational framework for high-speed data transfer and supports communication protocols like NVLink, PCIe, USB, and Ethernet. NVIDIA's NVLink, for example, is an ultra-fast interconnect that enhances performance and scalability in multi-GPU systems. A key aspect of Dr. Annampedu's role involves advancing SerDes technology through innovative signal processing techniques, including hardware-realistic functional modeling and simulation of next-generation NVLink and other cutting-edge interconnect designs supported by UPHY. His expertise in SerDes mixed-signal processing architecture has been instrumental in significantly boosting the capabilities of supercomputing systems. These advancements have broad applications across various fields, including artificial intelligence, virtual reality, robotics, weather forecasting, genomics, drug discovery, and complex scientific simulations, pushing the boundaries of computational science and engineering.

Before joining NVIDIA Corporation, Dr. Annampedu had a long and successful career with Bell Laboratories at Lucent Technologies in Allentown, Pennsylvania, which later became Broadcom Inc. During his nearly two-decade tenure at Broadcom between 1997 and 2016, he led various initiatives as a principal engineer. Dr. Annampedu's work primarily focused on the signal processing architecture of a complex chip known as the Read Channel, which is integral to every hard disk drive today. This chip is responsible for positioning the magnetic head over the data tracks, reading and converting magnetic signals into electrical signals, and writing data to the magnetic disk for storage. His foundational research in information storage technology continues to influence the field today. Additionally, Dr. Annampedu was an adjunct professor at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, from 2013 to 2016, sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation of engineers. He also served as an external advisor on the doctoral review committee for two Ph.D. candidates at Lehigh University.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Annampedu has been awarded approximately 50 U.S. patents. Notable recent SerDes-related patents include those for decision feed-forward equalization to cancel intersymbol interference and for clock data recovery convergence in modulated partial response systems. His prolific contributions to signal processing, highlighted by nearly 20 journal and conference publications, have earned him extensive recognition within the industry.

Dr. Annampedu's academic journey laid a strong foundation for his professional achievements. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Anna University Chennai in 1995, graduating with first-rank honors and a gold medal for being at the top of his class. Subsequently, he received a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1997. Moreover, Dr. Annampedu garnered a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Electrical Engineering from Lehigh University in 2007, where he was honored with the Elizabeth V. Stout Best Dissertation Award for his thesis on nanotechnology architectures for pattern matching.

In his free time, Dr. Annampedu loves spending time with his family. He enjoys gardening, making chai, and being outdoors. His family provides him with continuous support and inspiration, enriching both his personal and professional life.

Dr. Annampedu envisions future success by contributing to a team focused on creating innovative and sustainable high-performance computing systems. These systems prioritize energy efficiency, rapid performance, and versatile applications, including artificial intelligence. His remarkable contributions to signal processing and systems architecture continue to shape the future of technology, solidifying his reputation as a respected leader in his field.
