Dr. Jordan, an esteemed expert in molecular biology, has dedicated over 30 years to advancing the field of infectious disease diagnostics and public health microbiology. Since 2008, she has served as the director of the DC Center for AIDS Research NGS Lab at George Washington University. She teaches a public health microbiology class and conducts a wet lab class focusing on infectious disease diagnostics. Additionally, she occasionally gives guest lectures on public health virology and infectious disease epidemiology.
As part of her professional duties, Dr. Jordan oversees a laboratory that supports various large-scale grants, including the District of Columbia Center for AIDS Research, and manages a clinical trial unit studying anti- and survival drugs for FDA clearance. Her lab is one of 32 global HPTN CRS labs receiving and processing samples, participating in an immunology quality assurance program administered by Duke University. Furthermore, she offered next-generation sequencing services for DC CFAR investigators, such as viruses, cell genomes and human genomes from 2015-2024. Prior to her current role, she was a professor, clinical laboratory director at Magee-Women's Hospital at the School of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh from 1990 to 2008, and associate director of research at the Magee-Women's Research Institute from 1999-2006.
Dr. Jordan's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in medical technology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1977. She furthered her education by earning a doctorate in molecular virology from the School of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh in 1988. In addition to her academic credentials, she is board-certified as a high-complexity laboratory director by the American Board of Bioanalysis.
Throughout her career, Dr. Jordan has been recognized with several prestigious awards. She received the Laboratory Management Excellence Top Performer award from the HIV Prevention Trials Network in 2024 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pan American Society for Clinical Virology in 2020. Earlier in her career, she was recognized by the Neonatal Sepsis Club in 2004 and received a patent for PCR identification of four medically important Candida species using one primer pair in 1995.
Dr. Jordan's professional affiliations include memberships in the Pan-American Society for Clinical Virology and the American Society for Microbiology. She has also served civically on the Science Advisory Board for the DC Public Health Laboratory and Forensic Sciences from 2017 to 2024. Looking ahead in her career, she aims to transition into consulting, leveraging her extensive experience and expertise to continue making impactful contributions to the field.
