Mr. Hurt is a distinguished legal professional with an extensive career spanning over three decades. He currently serves as an Assistant United States Attorney at the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, a position he has held since 1999. In this role, he specializes in complex criminal investigations and has tried approximately 100 federal jury trials. His expertise as a trial attorney is widely recognized, and he is a respected member of the National Association of Assistant United States Attorneys.

Prior to his current role, Mr. Hurt was an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney at the Virginia Beach Commonwealth Attorney's Office from 1997 to 1999. He began his career by serving as a judicial law clerk for United States District Judge Glen M. Williams from 1993 until 1994. Following his clerkship, he served in the United States Navy as a Judge Advocate General from 1994 to 1997. Concurrent to his extensive career as a state and federal prosecutor, he served in the United States Naval Reserve Judge Advocate General's Corps retiring in 2024 as a Captain.

During his tenure with the Navy Reserve Captain Hurt served as commanding officer of the Government Appellant Unit and the Naval War College Law Unit. He also deployed to Iraq in 2009 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom where he served as Officer-in-Charge of the Central Criminal Court of Iraq and Legal Advisor to the Provost Marshal of Iraq. In this position he earned the Bronze Star for his actions. Captain Hurt ended his Navy career after serving as Deputy Legal Advisor in the Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Laying the groundwork for Mr. Hurt's career and military journey was his educational background. He earned a Bachelor of Science in economics from James Madison University, which he obtained in 1990, followed by a Juris Doctor from William & Mary Law School in 1993 where he was a member of the William and Mary Law Review. Additionally, he holds a certification in joint military education from the U.S. Naval War College, which he received in 2010.

Throughout his career, Mr. Hurt has been recognized for his exceptional contributions as a prosecuting attorney. Notably, he led a series of high-profile cases targeting synthetic cannabinoid (spice) producers both locally and nationally, resulting in the successful prosecution of over 100 individuals. For this work, he received a national award from the Department of Justice. His accolades also include the International Investigation of the Year by the Office of National Drug Control Policy in 2023, the Case of the Year by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force in 2023, the Administrator's Award by the Drug Enforcement Administration in 2022 and the Executive Office of the United States Attorney's Office, Director's Award in 2006.

In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Hurt has been actively involved in various civic organizations. He volunteered for his children's school sports teams, and co-founded 757Swim, a local swim club that develops swimmers. He is also a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. His dedication to community service reflects his commitment to fostering positive change both within and outside his professional sphere.

Mr. Hurt attributes much of his success to maintaining a balance between his professional and personal life, a principle instilled in him during his college years. He takes great pride in his marriage of 34 years and his six children. Looking ahead, he remains passionate about his work and family engagements, while his legacy is marked by significant contributions to the justice system and community service.
