Dr. Kaalberg's career at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas began in 2007 when he served as an instructor and a graduate assistant. He later became a teacher and team leader at Colegio Americano de Torreon from 2008 to 2009 before returning to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas as an instructor and department liaison in 2010. Dr. Kaalberg subsequently excelled as a special assistant to the chief of staff from 2012 to 2016 and as the special projects director from 2016 to 2018, and he relies on critical experience accumulated while the instructional and curriculum coordinator for the Farmington R-VII School District from 2005 to 2007.
Exceptional academic achievements further define Dr. Kaalberg's profile. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education from the University of Iowa, which he completed in 1999 before pursuing a Master of Science in elementary education from Southwest Baptist University, which he earned in 2003 while excelling as an elementary teacher at Farmington R-VII School from 2000 to 2005. In 2014, Dr. Kaalberg proudly completed his Doctor of Philosophy in curriculum and instruction with a focus on literacy and educational leadership at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, and he attributes his success to immersing himself in each project, having a clear vision and planning carefully.
One of Dr. Kaalberg's most significant achievements was his role in developing, managing, and executing the university's strategic plan, including the continued development of a data culture. His leadership helped elevate the University of Nevada-Las Vegas to the Carnegie R1 classification for doctoral universities, a prestigious status earned by only 146 U.S. institutions that demonstrate very high research activity. In addition, the university also attained the Carnegie community engagement classification, which highlights the school's success and unwavering commitment to excellence.
Throughout his career, Dr. Kaalberg has been recognized for his wide-ranging contributions to academia, and in 2017, he humbly accepted the University of Nevada-Las Vegas Graduate College Medallion. He is also a member of several distinguished organizations, including the Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity, the University of Iowa Student Association, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas Alumni Association and the Association of Teacher Educators.
Outside his professional life, Dr. Kaalberg enjoys spending time with his two children, swimming, reading and solving puzzles.
