As a consultant and aircraft crash safety expert, he has done design, analysis, and testing of aircraft seats equipped with energy-absorbing capabilities to protect occupants in the event of an accident. Similarly, he has analyzed aircraft accidents where the results were utilized in development of seat design and qualification standards for military and civilian aircraft. In recent years, he has served as an expert witness for law firms that represent aircraft manufacturers in accident litigation. In addition to his work in private practice, he is a professor emeritus of mechanical and aerospace engineering for Arizona State University's School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy, where he previously worked as a professor and as director of the Aerospace Research Center and the Airworthiness Assurance Center of Excellence.
During the early stages of his career, Dr. Laananen gained valuable expertise as the research and development manager for Simula Inc., an assistant professor at Pennsylvania State University, and a project engineer at Dynamic Science Inc. Dedicated to his country, he also served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve. A testament to his considerable industry knowledge, Dr. Laananen has contributed to articles in the Journal of Aircraft, the Journal of the American Helicopter Society, the Journal of Composite Materials, the Journal of Thermoplastic Composite Materials, and the International Journal of Crashworthiness.
An expert in his field, Dr. Laananen earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute before establishing himself professionally. Subsequently, he furthered his education by completing a Master of Science and a PhD in mechanical engineering from Northeastern University. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Laananen has actively participated, at both national and local level, in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Vertical Flight Society. He has been recognized with membership in Sigma Xi, Pi Tau Sigma, and the Sigma Gamma Tau National Aerospace Engineering Honor Society. He is a volunteer docent with the Heritage Flight Museum in conjunction with his professional endeavors.
