Ms. Swann is an accomplished instructional resource teacher at Spring Ridge Middle School, part of St. Mary's County Public Schools, where she has been serving since 2023. A devoted and passionate educator, she finds great joy in her work with children and families, particularly witnessing the growth and development of her students. In addition to her student-facing activities, her role also includes mentoring colleagues, empowering them to continue making a positive impact on the lives of young people for generations to come.
Prior to her current position, Ms. Swann dedicated eight years to teaching English at Esperanza Middle School. During her tenure there, she also held the position of English department chair, demonstrating her leadership and commitment to academic excellence.
Ms. Swann's journey in education began with a Bachelor of Arts in both English Literature and Adolescent Education from Elmira College in Elmira, New York, which she completed in 2015. She furthered her expertise by earning a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction from McDaniel College in 2020. In addition to her schooling, Ms. Swann attributes her success to her faith in God, Who she believes has been a consistent source of strength throughout her journey, and the teachers who mentored her and exemplified the qualities of an exceptional educator.
One of Ms. Swann's most significant accomplishments has been her foray into teaching computer science despite having no prior experience in the subject. To prepare for this challenge, she attended a weeklong camp to learn the curriculum and successfully taught two classes of students. Her dedication to ensuring her students comprehended the material led to a collaborative learning environment where students thrived. In fact, this effort resulted in two young women expressing their desire to pursue computer science in college, with one student enrolling in an advanced placement computer science class.
In addition to her professional achievements, Ms. Swann is a member of the Maryland State Education Association and has been recognized with several accolades, including the 2023 St. Mary's County Teacher of the Year Award. She is also involved with New Hope Church of God in Waldorf as a youth teacher, reflecting her commitment to community service and mentorship.
Outside of her career, Ms. Swann enjoys reading, drawing, painting, making jewelry, traveling, and spending time near the water. She also loves being surrounded by her family and friends. Looking ahead, she envisions continuing her career in education while remaining open to opportunities such as becoming an assistant principal or focusing on tutoring young people. She also plans to purchase a home, start a family, and maintain her involvement with her church.
