Dr. Searle is an illustrious English and comparative literature scholar with a career spanning over five decades. He has been associated with the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle since 1970, where he holds the title of professor emeritus. His expertise in intellectual history and literary criticism has significantly contributed to academia.

Throughout his tenure at UW, Dr. Searle held numerous influential roles. He was the founding director of the UW Humanities and Arts Computing Center. He also served as the director of the Walter Chapin Simpson Humanities Center and the College Studies Program on campus and was a founding faculty member of several programs, including the Comparative History of Ideas Program, Criticism and Theory Program, and Textual Studies Program. Additionally, Dr. Searle chaired the UW Intellectual property management advisory committee. Dr. Searle's leadership also included serving as the graduate program coordinator for comparative literature.

Dr. Searle's contributions to the field are not limited to his administrative roles. He is also a prolific editor and author, having edited seminal works such as "Critical Theory since 1965" in 1985 and "Critical Theory since Plato," third edition, in 2005. These publications have been pivotal in shaping the curriculum and study of literary criticism by integrating works from philosophy, psychology, anthropology, and social sciences. Additionally, Dr. Searle authored numerous articles for professional journals, further cementing his influence in literary studies.

Dr. Searle's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in English from Utah State University in 1965. Continuing his education at the University of Iowa, he earned a Master of Arts in English in 1968 and a Doctor of Philosophy in English in 1970. These academic achievements laid the foundation for his successful future in higher education and literary studies.

In addition to his extensive education, Dr. Searle has been an active member of several industry-related organizations. He is a member of the Modern Language Association and founded the Society for Critical Exchange, reflecting his commitment to advancing critical theory and intellectual discourse. More recently, he and colleagues at other universities have launched The Tautegory Project, devoted to philosophical and critical conversation. (cf. www.tautegory.org). Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Searle has been involved in civic activities, volunteering with Action for a Better Community.

Since 2018, Dr. Searle has been in retirement but continues to engage with his passions. He is currently working on rebuilding instrumentation for a British brass band and is authoring a book of new and collected essays. These endeavors highlight his ongoing dedication to both creative projects and scholarly work.
