Dr. Herman is a distinguished clinical psychologist with over a decade of experience in the field of mental and behavioral health. Currently serving as the facility medical director, primary care psychologist, integrated behaviorist, and department chair at The Corvallis Clinic in North Albany, Oregon, he has been instrumental in advancing integrated behavioral health services within primary care settings. In addition to his primary endeavors there, he has also sat on The Corvallis Clinic marketing committee, and several mental health working groups while at Samaritan Health Services between 2012-2021.
In 2015, Dr. Herman co-founded a psychology training program for Samaritan Health alongside Dr. Robert Fallows. This program included practicum placements, an internship program, and a postdoctoral program. Under his leadership as clinical director from 2015 to 2021, the program achieved APPIC membership within six to eight months and APA accreditation within 18 months. Additionally, they received AITCN membership within 24 months for their neuropsychology internship branch. The program garnered international attention and significantly increased access to mental health services in the Albany-Corvallis area.
Dr. Herman's clinical career began with a postdoctoral fellowship at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania, from 2009 to 2010. He previously served as a doctoral intern at Tripler Army Medical Center and Pacific Islands VA Health Care in Honolulu, Hawaii, from 2008 to 2009. His earlier clinical placements included positions at the Loma Linda Family Medicine Center and Jerry L. Pettis Memorial VA in Loma Linda, California, from 2006 to 2008, and at the Psychological Services Clinic at Loma Linda University Health from 2005 to 2006.
Dr. Herman's academic journey is marked by significant achievements that have laid the foundation for his professional success. He earned a Doctor of Psychology in clinical and health psychology from Loma Linda University in 2009. Previously, he obtained a master's degree in general and theoretical psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 2004 and a bachelor's degree in psychology, with a minor in philosophy, from Pomona College in 2002.
Throughout his career, Dr. Herman has been actively involved in various divisions of the American Psychological Association, including those dealing with health psychology, sexual orientation and gender diversity, and culture, ethnicity and race. He has also contributed to academic literature as a co-author of "The Role of Catastrophizing Beliefs in Effective Chronic Pain Treatment," published in the Journal of Rational Emotive and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in 2015.
Dr. Herman's dedication to his field is further exemplified by his receipt of the Nancy Bell Leadership Award from Samaritan's Graduate Medical Education in 2019, making him the first non-physician to receive this honor. Looking ahead, he aims to further enhance mental and behavioral health services within the Albany and Corvallis communities. He also seeks to support and encourage the presence of integrated behaviorists in primary care settings nationwide, continuing his commitment to improving patient care through innovative behavioral health solutions.
