Dr. Ascencio-Ibáñez's career began in Mexico at CINVESTAV Unidad Irapuato, where he worked as a research assistant and lab manager from 1988 to 2000. In this capacity, he worked on various virus-related projects, including the first transgenic trials in Mexico for virus resistance in potatoes. In 2008, Dr. Ascencio-Ibáñez founded Ascefran LLC in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he continues to serve as the firm's owner, further showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to advancing scientific research.
Highly educated, Dr. Ascencio-Ibáñez studied in his native Mexico, receiving a Bachelor of Science in biology from Autonomous University of Guadalajara in 1985. After immigrating to the U.S. in 2001, he garnered a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry from North Carolina State University in 2007.
Throughout his career, Dr. Ascencio-Ibáñez has been an active member of several organizations, including the Virology Society, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the American Society of Phytopathology, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
