After graduating with her undergraduate degree in 2022, Ms. Martinson joined Tepia as a project manager. She swiftly ascended the ranks, becoming the director of engineering in 2023, a position she still holds today in light of her successful restructuring of the department of DevOps and engineering. In her directorship, she has stood at the helm of the DevOps, development and quality assurance (QA) departments, guiding developers and managing projects from inception to completion. She is well-regarded for providing developers with clear, purposeful direction to bring their clients' visions to life, creating company standards for QA procedures, conducting QA internship programs, and developing standards for interviewing and onboarding procedures. Ms. Martinson joined the executive team in her early 20s, demonstrating her steadfast commitment to her work and desire to inspire others to pursue their dreams.
Ms. Martinson has exuded an unwavering dedication to technology since her formative years, discovering her affinity for creating computer games and dissecting and reconstructing gadgets at 12 years old. After shifting her attention to the education sector while attending Farragut High School, she imparted her knowledge and wisdom to college students before pursuing her own academic success at East Tennessee State University (ETSU). She taught at STEM summer camps and the Innovation Academy of Houston Middle School between 2018 and 2020. While attending ETSU, she completed internships in advanced research through the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, sponsored by ETSU's TRiO. The program is one of the U.S. Department of Education's special initiatives that assist disadvantaged students in their educational endeavors. Ms. Martinson was the concluding speaker of the 2020 program. She also served ETSU in administrative and clerical positions during her studies until graduating with a Bachelor of Science in computer science, with a minor in psychology, in 2022. Concurrently, she completed numerous certifications through Google, including agile project management, project planning, and initiation and execution.
During her academic career at ETSU, Ms. Martinson developed a comprehensive curriculum for introductory computer programs, promoting technology education to underrepresented populations in her community. During this time, she collaborated with Professor Matthew Desjardins, with whom Ms. Martinson found an invaluable mentor and worked to establish college programs to introduce computers to local schools. Moreover, she was actively engaged with executive aides, through which she gained administrative experience and nurtured her business acumen. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she adapted her academic approach, transitioning to a research-intensive extracurricular program at Michigan State University on a groundbreaking phylogenetic tree initiative, as well as advancing the "Thor: A Deep Learning Approach for Face Mask Detection to Prevent the COVID-19 Pandemic" project to make it fully remote. The latter aimed to develop automated detection of unmasked personnel in public spaces to respond by providing a surgical mask to them to remedy the situation promptly.
Her honors thesis, titled "Stumbling into Virtual Worlds. How Resolution Affects Users' Immersion in Virtual Reality and Implications for Virtual Reality in Therapeutic Applications," investigated whether rendering resolution affected users' sense of immersion in VR. Ms. Martinson has presented her research at the Appalachian Student Research Forum, the Tennessee State Capitol, the Boland Undergraduate Research Symposium and the Baylor University Virtual Research Conference.
Ms. Martinson was named an Outstanding Junior and an Outstanding Undergraduate in Computing by ETSU in 2020 and 2022, respectively, and was inducted into the 1911 Society. Named to commemorate ETSU's founding, the 1911 Society recognizes the university's most notable graduates from undergraduate, graduate and professional programs. Ms. Martinson was one of nine undergraduates in her graduating class to be bestowed with this honor. She previously earned first placement in a group project and best results in the design challenge at Techbridges 3.0 at Columbia University and received a Coding Achievement recognition from the Knox County Schools Board of Education in 2017.
Reflecting on the mentors and inspirations who guided her, Ms. Martinson credits the influence of her parents, who motivated her to strive for greater heights and leave a legacy for others to follow in her path. Ms. Martinson's mother instilled in her a determined and empowered approach to life, encouraging her to surpass any limitations. Despite losing her father at an early age, she found a wellspring of motivation to strive for more and positively impact others. Likewise, Ms. Martinson is grateful for the presence of inspiring mentors, such as her high school coding teacher, who nurtured her passion for technology and instilled in her the belief that gender is never a barrier to success, and the chief executive officer of Tepia, Abraham Agopian, whose tutelage and support have provided a strong foundation to success.
