Before his tenure in environmental health, Mr. Nalty served as a Deputy Probation Officer and Deputy Sheriff for the Humbolt County Sheriff's Office between 1998 and 2008. He also worked as a recruiter for the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve from 2008 to 2009.
Mr. Nalty's professional journey began with his service in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, where he served from 1990 to 2020. He started as a Port Securityman petty officer and later advanced to Senior Chief Marine Science Technician (E-8). During his tenure in the military, Mr. Nalty conducted vessel boardings, ensured compliance with domestic and international environmental and shipping laws, responded to, analyzed, and documented pollution incidents, and assisted in preparing and responding to all hazard incidents and events using the Incident Command System.
Mr. Nalty's educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from San Jose State University in 1994, and a Master of Science in Health Science and Public Health from Trident University International in 2014. Additionally, he received several professional credentials, including as an outreach instructor from the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services, a Hazardous Materials Technician and Hazardous Materials Specialist through the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services, and a Hazardous Waste Operations and Environmental Response from the U.S. Coast Guard.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mr. Nalty is an active member of several industry- and civic-related organizations, including the Mendocino County Fire Chief's Association, the California State Firefighters' Association, the Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Association, and the American Legion.
In honor of his service, Mr. Nalty has been decorated with numerous accolades, including an Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Coast Guard Commendation Medal, Coast Guard Reserve Good Conduct Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, among others. He attributes his military and civilian success to his unwavering commitment to teamwork and adaptability.
Mr. Nalty plans to retire from county service to focus on expanding his business and training first responders. He intends to hire additional employees to ensure continuous coverage and dedicate his time to nurturing the skills of firefighters, police officers, and hospital staff.
